As usual I'm clueless. I'd appreciate some input. Probably going to go with tampahumidor.com. I only plan on having like 15 cigars on hand, but I'm going to buy one with a capacity of at least 50.

I'm considering these two, one a basic model the other a better model, discounted cause of blems.

One difference is the hygrometer on the better model, it's listed as glass hygrometer with brass frame. The standard doesn't even say it's glass. Also the humidifier on the better model is roughly twice the size on the standard model. But how much do these differences really matter? Thanks for the help guys.

A couple key points Mister Chickenfried:

It's too small. If you are interested enough in keeping cigars to seek out information on the web, you will be upgrading this humidor 3 or 4 times like the rest of us did when we bought too small.

The hygrometer must be digital. The glass analog hygro likely isnt worth 2 cents. Go with a digital hygrometer upgrade or buy one elsewhere. Like here--> Digital Hygro and Stuff

As far as humidifying...depends on your needs. I think the best solution is the new humi packs (Boveda). But you can start with the regular standard distilled water and 50/50 solution. This stuff is also available on that accessories page.

yes, seriously get a much larger humidor than you think you will need. a 50 count is only good for holding a lot of the same cigars. if you have a full humidor you will be digging to find certain cigars and the likely hood of damaging them increases. get a larger one with a tray. i wish i had. i am planning on building a humidor this summer still but i am completely out of room in my 50 count humidor and my small ice chest. i will need to get something else to hold me over for about 4 months.

no matter what size you get, get a digital hygrometer and use the boveda packs or the tubs with the crystals in them it is a million times easier than tending to the humidifiers

I agree with everyone. Get a larger humi. I started out with a 50 count humi and now I find myself just storing my cigars in a large tupperware container just because it's easier to sort and find my cigars.

Im having a HELL of a time trying to keep my humidor above even 40% RH.....!!!!!

Im to the point where I don't care if the wood rots as long as the mutha f'er holds moisture!

My humidor was really acting up too so that also lead to the change to a tupperdor.

I usually had to moisten some paper towel and keep it in the humidor just to keep the humidity up.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to cool my heels for a while. I have a tendency to go a little overboard when I get into a new hobby. In a month or two if I'm still into cigars I'll grab a humidor.

Try going to eBay. I just bought a beautiful desktop cabinet humidor for about $150. Keeps humidity like a champ and is nice to look at as well.

Figure out your needs ( size) and buy from Tampa Humiditors. Best product/price and guarantee is flawless. Just bought a 250 cigar unit that was defective. They sent me a 300 cigar unit in exchange and paid the shipping. No costs.
Wonderful service.

wow im pretty impressed with malones experience. next time im ready for a new humidor tampa will definatly be first on my list.

Wow the logic part of me, was able to hold out all of two days  . Thanks to your advice I ended up with the 100 cigar model and upgraded to a digital hygrometer. Also grabbed a colibri lighter and xikar cutter.

But I have doubts about my cutter purchase. My knives are very sharp, as a knife geeks should be, and gave me nice clean, effortless cuts. But oh well.

Oh yeah thanks for the quick pm reply bloof :D, so I could get my order in fast.

Well, I'm glad I was at home in front of an online computer, with no power outages to speak of. I'm usually in NYC on Mondays, running around and with no access to an online computer. Let us know how things work out with the new furniture. :D

I have seen "Boveda" appeared once on this thread and once or twice on "clean humidor" thread.

What exactly is "Boveda" and where can I get some? How much does it cost?

Bloofington,

I live in New York City, we have not have a power outage since 8/23/03. It doesn't happen to often here. lol.

That was on 8/14/2003 at 4:11 p.m., unless you're talking about a boro-specific brownout nine days later. As for me, I live 70 miles upstate in a semi-rural area, and the power goes out several times a year. As near as I can figure by the state of certain devices when I got home last Thursday night, it occurred in the afternoon and lasted about 14 minutes. It usually doesn't last long, but it does indeed happen a few times a year here.

Bloofington,

You are right on the day, 8/14/03. My mistake. After I type the day, I was wondering if I had the day right, because it did not sound right to me. Had it happened on 8/23, I would sure remembered it vividly, because the next day would be my birthday.

Do you have any info on the "Boveda" by chance?

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with it. I think it's a packet of some kind, which helps keep the humidity level in humidors where someone might be having difficulty maintaining proper levels. There'll be others along who know better than me. I'm getting ready for some yard work. See ya later. :D
