I about to move and I'm waiting till then to buy a humidor. I was wondering what is the easiest storage device I can make till then.

I am not mechanically inclined so I need very good instructions. There has to be a website with pictures and instructions. Can you guys help me out?

I am looking for something small that I can travel with would a tuperdor be better and how do I make that? I need step by step instructions...

Get a Humida pack from a cigar shop.
They come in three sizes & work pretty good for short term.

Or use a few plastic zip lock bags?

Put the cigars inside two bags then put that into anther bag with a damp paper towl in that outer bag.
Then put that in another bag.
Shuld be OK for a week -

CC, shouldn't he use distilled water to dampen the paper towel?

with 11K sticks I had a storage space problem, I just went to the local flower shop got a few blocks of the green foam they use for making arangments & dropped them in a bucket of water to hydrate, took some large lawn & leaf bags, dropped in a few boxes of stogies & one foam block, a twist tie & I was good for 2 weeks, , if a lawn & leaf bag will work, a baggie with a wet paper towel will work, , not a great looking storage method but they will work, no problem with function, just poor eye appeal.
now I have shaved the stock to a managable level & just have a few humidors , & 2 of them are empty but that will not last long !!
Enjoy, Vince

I noticed at the local Wally World that they had out all kinds of tupperware type containers, mostly for people to use to store Christmas decorations in I guess. But I got to looking at the different sizes and thought they would be great for storing cigars in. Just not sure how airtight they might be. Most were under $20 or so.

Cigar boxes inside an ammo can. Run the cans and lids through the dishwasher to remove anything malodorous. Spritz the outside of the cigar boxes with distilled water, close the can.

If you find Spanish Cedar, cut some to line the inside of an ammo can, then you can store loose cigars without cigar boxes.

Tim,
A lot of people seem to think so -
if it is a couple of sticks for a week or two I (personally) don't think it matters.
I've put spring water in my humidor many times and never have had any problems - but better safe than sorry!

Wow, thanks everyone. Great ideas. I read this forum all the time but rarely post. Maybe I should post more often.

CC, you are right I forgot to say PLEASE. So PLEASE forgive me... lol

The reason to use distilled water is to avoid the build up of mineral deposits in your humidification device. So for a papertowel, it will not matter.

True, but people also say distilled is purer so less chance of mold also.

Coastal,

I am going to agree with CC on this. If your local has them, I recommend the Humida pack that come in three sizes.

Fuente makes the 3 size Humidor bags that can run you from $3 to Just over $10. They are perfect for traveling and can last up to 6 months.

If you can't find one, let me know, and I'll send you one.

Cheap Storage

I may have gone the cheapest.

I got an Igloo Cube cooler and a couple of old desk letter racks. I stacked my cheaper cigars along the sides of the racks and put my better ones in the racks. I put the bundles and boxes on top.

I got a gallon of Ketosis Treat (AKA Propylene Glycol) at the Feed Store for $4.95 and a travel soap dish. I put a few cedar chips from the closet into one half of the soap dish and a diluted PG in the other half. A $6 temperature/hygrometer from Wally World tells me I hit 78%-81% humidity on my first try.

I can hold about 250 cigars in it for a grand total of $35. If I had room on my shelf for a bigger cooler I could hold more.

humidity is too high imho it needs to be around 65% for better smoking also having it that high can cause mold and other bad things to happen to your cigars

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I immediate went and increased the concentration of the PG/H2O solution and brought the humidity down. I thought you were supposed to keep it between 70%-85%. I keep my best cigars in a desktop cedar lined humidor but I would still hate for any of the ones in my "quantity box" to mold on me.

I appreciate the advice.

Wrong kind of cedar - it should be removed asap!
That type of cedar can impart a strong flavor that you do not want.

An increase of PG to the ratio of water should drop RH.

usually a 50/50 mix is used a 70/30 mix will drop the humidity level.
That said - most people here just use (D) water and no PG.

another people that use PG should know is that is does not evaporate
as fast as water so it will keep building up in a credo.
After a period of using PG it is best to add water only.

Personally I say use a bead media - works best!
