ok, 5 vegas humidor has arrived, what a beaut. noww what....?

any advice would be great, any direction to previous written info would help too, thank you

it has an analog hygrometer, i know this might not be the best, but i rather try it first

Is it empty?

If so it will need to be seasoned.
The Analog is a waste of time - more trouble than it's worth.
I would say salt test it, but the change from day to day.

Is it a credo type of unit? (disk with foam in it?)

some1 told me to buy distilled water, i have that ready, it is a hundred count humidor, all wood inside, has a shelf, umm i dont know how else to describe it

I just recieved my new humi too. Now here were my directions:
1. Be very patient.
2. Put a shallow bowl of distilled water in the humi and close the top. Leave alone for at least 3 days
3. After 3 days check the hygrometer looking for a 80%rh.
4. Close top and Leave alone for another 2-3 days.
5. Open humi and fill 1/4 of the way with cigars. After installing humi unit. Also remove the bowl.
6. Wait another 3 days before adding more cigars.
Says this will help to not dry out your cigars and help to keep a trouble free rh level.

I'm on day 4 arggggggggggg. I want to play!!!!!! :p

do i need to buy any of that crystal stuff in the jar for humididty, my humidor came with one of those sponge type thing in a plastic casing that goes on the top, is that sufficient, how do i set that up as well?

also, when seasoning wih a bowl of water, should i also wipe down all the cedar a little bit, i heard i am supposed to

In my opinion - NO

It can easily stain the inside of your humi if you do it incorrectly. Not worth it to me.

Even worse they cause the wood to warp or splinter.
Nothing worse than snagging a cigar on a spliter or finding your new humidor no longer closes/seals properly!

Personally I'd go to Heartfelt industries web page and buy some of their 65% beads.
You can season the humidor with a bowl and then place the beads inside it for a day and you will be good to go.
The beads are great and make keeping the RH easy!

Im with CC the beads are good. I have the tube and think they do a great job.

Lets see some pics

hygrometer has been in bag for 2 hours, still no change in humidity, its reading 52%, is something wrong, i know it takes 6+ hours but i figured i would start moving up to 75
it has a clear rubber band around the sides but i figured that is for staying in the humidor correctly, plus i dont have the magnet on it, i dk, im just geting excited

The analog just don't work right - brand new - 10 years old
they just don't work - not sure why they make them!

Go to Target or Walmart and get a digital hygrometer. Best 10 bucks you will spend.

Don't get so overwhelmed with the reading being exact but it is better to know if it is stable. For example mine runs between 61 and 66 some days but after getting 65% beads I know I am good.

BTW...Beads are the way to go. Just keep them moist and you don't have to worry about everything.

ok, im almost done with the questions, im gonna go for the digital hygrometer tomrow, but if i have distilled water do i need the beads really, and do i need to calibrate that at all, should i wait to put the bowl of water in the humidor until i get the hygrometer or should i go ahead for 3 days with the water and then add the hygrometer

You can go ahead with the water now.

The beads go into the water bowl or replace the water bowl.
They are pre-set to hold RH at the right level.
You do need to add water to them from time to time.
Also the beads will suck out ectra humidity if the humidor gets warm.
They make life very easy for holding a steady RH.
You put them into the humidor with a shot glass filled with water next to them - the next day the beads have sucked up enough water to hold the RH at the pre-set level.

Listen to CC BEADS are the answer, I love them, and cant imagine ever using anything else.

I've never used one of those before, but you can buy a similar tube to put the beads in at heartfelt. I look at it like this...'ive got a 150ct humidor, there are about 50-60 cigars in it. Each cigar cost between $4 and $25 bucks. I just can't trust a $3.00 humidifier to protect that kind of investment. I bought a 1/2 pound of beads and a few different sizes of tubes for under $30.00. To me it was well worth the cost for my own piece of mind. good luck.

i agree 100%, i happen to live right next to JR and it would be so much easier to pick up stuf there then to wait for shipping, that is of course if it will do the best popssible job for me

Now I'm envious. Jr's is how I got started smoking cigars. It is a reall cool store to visit. You'll have to ask the others about whats best. The beads are best for me, and I swear by them. I tried the credos that came with my humidors., I tried crystal humidifiers, and I couldn't control the Rh. Once I got the beads, everything evened out and its been smooth sailing. My cigars really seem too feel, smell, and smoke better now that my RH stays constant, with very slow fluxuations. gtood luck.
