When I buy a box of cigars, or just a few cigars, will i need to purchase a humidor? If i decide not to buy one how long will they last if i dont have one? Why exactly do you need a humidor?

The humidor keeps them from drying out & burning hot.
There is more to it than just that - you could always keep them in a tupperware container with a something to keep some humidty in it.
A small piece of damp paper towel - ect;.

ok so if you were to buy a box of cigars, can you just leave them in the box? how long will they last in the box without anything in it

I would leave the cigars in the box, and place the box in a tupperware-like container. Then put a humidifier (credo, damp and NOT SOAKED paper towel of DISTILLED WATER) in the tupperware.

If you are unsure about a box purchase, Then I would recommend placing an order for a sampler or just pick out some singles. If you order them from cigar.com, they will be shipped to you in a zipper bag with a water pillow in it. You could actually just keep them in that bag for several months with no problem. Just keep an eye on the water pillow, and soak it in distilled water when it starts to get flat. (keep them out of direct light as much as possible)

You hit it right on the head Spider. And then once you start collecting, you can start looking at humidors, and that my friend is a whole different story.

Some guys say buy the biggest humi you can find right away, but I started with (and so do a lot of guys) a 50 count and went up from there. Brenda started a thread about coolidors, (you can search for that thread) which you will need if your hobby takes over and you start collecting boxes.

Don't be scared, its a lot of fun, but you can get carried away pretty easily!!

There you go!

then there is always cigarbid.com.........Thanks a lot, Kelvin!

edit: as if one addiction hobby was not enough!
