Humidor Problem

So, I was given a new humidor a couple of months back and it's a very nice model which holds about 300-400. However, the seal around the lid is bad....it's very lose. There is a 'thunk' when the lid is closed...not a 'whoosh.'

So, I tried some very thin window/door seal, but it turned out to be too thick. At this point it seems to hold very nicely at around 43% humidity...does anyone have any ideas on how to fix one of these, or do I just have a pretty wood box?

is there two flat surfaces meeting each other, or is there a lip on the main section of the humidor?

I've got 2 flat surfaces meeting each other....I think the problem is there might be 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch on the inside where the inner frame of the lid and the raised lip of the base make no contact...not sure if that makes sense?

I'd call the place you bought it from and demand they replace it.
Complain about all the cigars that were ruined & how you almost
gave up smoking - let them know you are new to this and it took a few months till someone that knew what to look for helped you.

Beyond that -
It is such a hard question to answer without seeing the humidor.
2 thoughts -

First they sell a sealent that you squirt around the window in the winter.
I can check for the name tomorrow I have to go to the hardware store. It forms into a rubber like substance & does not expand.
It can easily be removed as well.
It might work for this type of situation.

Also can you remove the hinges and just sand off the high spots?
Not sure how handy you are with wood working -
you need to be really careful doing this.
Keeping the sanding block at a perfect angle or you'll have an even worse problem.

That said - you might be able to replace (or move) the hinges to allow room for the foam window seal you started with.

Can you post a picture of a link.

Have you tried the flashlight test--sticking a flashlight inside and seeing if any light comes through the gap?

If you have too much sealer on be very careful and remove it right away. You can jack the hinges out of whack and then you'll never get it right again.

If you want to try using thinner stipping and can't find it anywhere elsewould be http://www.mcmaster.com. They're an industrial supply house who has it down to 1/32 of an inch.

Thanks for all the replies! This is simply the best forum.

I'm going to try a few things this weekend. I'll start with the flashlight test, some foam sealer, and maybe the mcmaster.com thin seal. I'll also post pictures if I get a chance....

The funny thing is everything looks like it is tight, especially at the back of the hinges. This isn't critical as I already have a humidor that is working, it's just more of an interesting project....since it was a freebie. It's a couple years old, so no chance of sending it back....

Thanks again for all the input!

That was priceless. It's too bad I don't have a digital camera with a computer patch-in thingy, or you folks would be seeing a lot more of that kind of silliness. Corojobrad must be related to me, maybe on the Jewish (my mother's) side of the family. Her father was from Ukraine and her mother from Poland. I hear that we had some relatives named Silliov and Irreverenofski.
