Hi everyone, I'm rather new to the hobby and I need a hand!

I have a generic humidor that my dad got me when I was in college, but I neglected the cigar lifestyle for a few years and kept junk in it.

I recently remembered how much I love cigars, so I cleaned out the humi, wiped down the sides, put in a few shot glasses of water and then put in an order with C.com. I now have a good selection of smokes, but the bad thing is, my humi won't keep humidity! I have a can of Humi-care in there as well as the two water pillows I received in my order, but the humidity isn't going over 60! I've put the cigars back in the shipping bags with the water pillow but obvously that solution isn't very long term.

I'm looking at one of the humidors from Tampa Humidors, as they fit my price range. Does anyone know if these are decent humidors? It not, dooes anyone know a good 40-50 count humi under 60 dollars?

Thanks in advance!

calibrate your hygro.
look into a coolerador :).

What are you using to determine to humidity? If it's not a digital hygrometer it's not reliable.

And!!! Buy as big a humidor as you can possibly afford!!! You will regret it if you don't!

Are you Kidding? LOL

If you spend any time here you are going to need a larger Humi than that. For the money that you are talking about, go get a cooler and some exiscat (SP) kitty litter (same thing as the beads) This way you can be around 40 bucks. You would need some boxes for the cedar but that is it. If you really want a wood one. spend the money now and get the largest that you can afford.

I started out with a 50 ct than went to A 150 ct than a 60 Qt cooler than a 140 qt cooler now a fridge.. It is a slippery slope my friend.

I'd say, use a tupperware container until the levels in your humi reach the right levels.

And, don't spend any money on a humidor until you know how serious you are about cigars.

I started smoking cigars eight months ago. I bought a 20 count. Then, a 50 count. Then, made a coolidor. Now, I have an Avanti 28 bottle cooler.

the only reason why you should get a humi that holds >300 is if you are going to place it on your office desk. Anything larger and you would have no room for work to be done. In this case you would be bringing cigars in from home and placeing them there for a week or so ... in other words a temporary home while you wait to smoke them.

my desk top is called "the capri" i got it from cheaphumidors.com. it was about 45 or so after shipping and a hygromiter and a seasoning packet. It came with a credo style humidier. This will be replaced by beads in the next few weeks. I like it. Its simple. it gets the job done. but i dont age anything in there. its temporary storage. thats all any box that holds less than 300 or so should be.

... of course mine is empty right now....

Thanks for the advice guys!

I'm going to hold off buying a new humi till I figure out how many smokes I'll really be storing. I have a big tupperware container I'll store my smokes in for now with the Humi-care.

I'm also working on re-seasoning the humi I have. Because it has sat for so long unused, that may also be the problem. If it starts to hold a solid humidity, I'll move the smokes over.

I wouldn't worry about 60% humidity. It'll go up gradually, the more cigars you put in there. Don't do too much wiping, because you don't want to warp the wood. Trust me. Check the threads around here and you'll see we've had a ton of discussions about humidity levels. Most of us have found that 60-65% is optimal, rather than 70%.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind once the seasoning is done. I only wiped it down once, and then put the sponge in a open plastic bag along with the filled Humi-care gell container. I'll let it sit till tomorrow and see how the humidity holds.

You guys are all awesome!
