possible humidor problem

okay so i have had my humidor for about a month now when i first got it i filled the humidifier device, very lightly wiped down the interior of the humidor with distilled water and did the salt test and calibrated my analog hygrometer, and left a single shot glass to "season" the wood for 6 days.

now i have about 65-75 smokes in there and i am using a digital hygrometer and the highest i got it to say was 65% at around a consistent temp of 70 - 75 degrees f.

but i am only able to get it that high with the the humi device filled and 3 shots glasses of distilled water in there. this has been that way for a week and a half and it still stays at 65%. if i remove the shot glasses it will go to what i had before of about 55-57%.

solutions that stp900 recommended i check the seal with a dollar bill to make sure it seals properly and it seems very snug, and i ordered the humi jar thing, he seems to think it might still be acclimating as most of my smokes came from reno and its very dry there.

You need a digital hydrometer. The analog hydrometers are not accurate. Radioshack has some inexpensive ones that work really well.

You can test the seal of your humidor with a flashlight, as well. Stick the flashlight inside and see if any light leaks out.

I live in a very dry climate. It took a couple of weeks for me to season my humidor. A/C units also dry 'em out.

Good luck!

Patience patience

This time of year it is traditionally extremely dry depending on where you live and it would not surprise me if it took almost a month let alone a week to properly season a humidor. But there is good news for you...

65% humidity is just great and your lucky that with all your sticks in it and with three humidity sources, that it will hold 65%. Keep all three humidifiers in there with your sticks, and when the humidity does start to climb to 70% or so, remove one of them and see where it holds. If it starts to climb to 70 or so again with only two humidifiers, remove another one and you should be set (but i'd almost bet the farm that you may need the reg. humidifier and atleast one shot glass of water for quite some time since its a new humi)

I would always need to add a little "booster" while I was using the Creedo type humidifiers during this time of year.

This time of year I need to add a booster bowl for a few days out of each month. Everytime it opens I loose so much humidity. If I notice that my oasis has been chugging along for a while trying to catch up, I'll add a bowl of water to the bottom for a couple hours.

Wusker - when did you put most of the smokes in the humidor?

about two weeks after i got mt humi they arrived

I agree with Brenda - first things first - get a Digital hygrometer. I missed that one. Do the salt test just like the analog and then get your reading. You may be higher or lower than you think.

Get a digital first, I t may still be dry but a dial type is no to good

i have found that one creedo style humidification device is not enough. I also found that they hydrate very unevenly.

if its worth it to you i think beads work out well.

Incorrect. You still need to check the calibration of a digital hygrometer. I made this mistake when I first got mine. When I did the salt test, it read about 6% low so now I add 6% to what ever it reads. Digital is more consistent but not necessarily more accurate.

Sorry I did not see that digital comment. Brad is right you have to salt test it also, mine is off 4 %. I would highly recomend that you salt test it

good info thanks guys didnt know that. okay i guess ill have to empty everything out tonight and try it over night,

also i noticed that someone said lighttly spray the inside of the humi down with a water bottle when you fiorst get it but i only lightly wiped it down, did i not prepare it properly. seems like there are conflictions about this

ty again for the help

Sorry, I missed the digital comment, as well. But, you still need to salt test it. I have three hydrometers that are off by just a bit. I put a sticker next to the display. For example: " + 3."

I would avoid putting water directly on the wood to season it. Putting a bowl or shot glass of water inside is best.

Humidification beads are fantastic (cheap, too.) They help keep the level even. Here is where I got mine.

+1 on the Hearfelt Industries hudification beads. I use the 65% beads in both my humidors and they work great. Along the same lines as your problem, I have to use the beads, a sponge humidifier, and a dish of water to keep the humidity up in my 150ct humidor.
