Humidor Questions

My friend found a deal at a local shop and the guy he talked to said that the deal comes with a few cigars and a desktop humidor. I don't know all the details about the cigars but I know that I would like to invest in a small humidor and this might be a way to start my collection. I don't have the money to go big with a humidor so I was really considering this approach. I think the total price is about $20. I'm just trying to get your thoughts on this because I'm really new to the cigar scene.

As for the humidor, I have a few questions. That humidor is a 20 count desktop humidor, would that be efficient enough for good cigars? I won't be buying any boxes of cigars anytime soon (lack of money) so I was wondering, would that humidor be good enough for lets say if I was to get a few single cigars from a local shop or a web site and I wanted to keep them fresh until I get the chance to smoke them? My second question, when you have a small box humidor like that one, what exactly do you need to have to get it to and keep it at its full potential?(tools, maintenance, anything of that such)

Just remember guys, I'm still learning, so I'm sorry for all the questions. :)

If you're really new to cigars I'd hold off on buying a humidor. If you need to keep cigars you can use a tupperware with a DIY humidifier (sponge, wet paper towel, etc.)

this way if you do become a cigar nut, like the rest of us, you can save up your money for a much larger humidor. A 20 count is waaaaaay too small.

As for tools, hold off on spending money. But, if you must a digital hydrometer is the way to go. Radio shack has some inexpensive ones. And, humidification beads are my favorite.

i too support the tupperware model. use it for now, then when(there is no if) you get uncontrollably hooked you will already be used to the wonders of plastic and are set for a jumbo cooler.

but really. do the options that are cheapest. if you can find out what cigars are included, it might be just the deal to get started. a few cigars and place to put em...

I was able to get a list of the cigars:

Slow-Aged 826 by Perdomo Glorioso
Gurkha Connecticut Reserve Robusto #4
Fonseca Serie F Robusto
Perdomo Reserve Cameroon 'F'
5 Vegas Gold Robusto
Torano Exodus 1959 Toro
Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Toro Maduro

Depending on what you think about the cigars, I'm starting to lean towards the tupperware. But if you think these are some good cigars to get me started, the I'll pick this up.

You can't go wrong with 5 Vegas IMHO. I like the Gold more than the Classic (which is also very good, along with the "A" maduro) and believe it to be the best cigar for the money right now.

As for a humi, get a big one. I've already got my 75-100ct stuffed along with a complimentary 20ct humi I got with a mixed sampler of Gurkhas I just received today. The cooler idea is the way to go, I know I'm going to be getting one stat. The other 2 were filled within a month, the smaller of which was empty when I got it today and stuffed when I put it away an hour later.

I agree with Brenda. Try some outand if you think your gonna get into cigars it a big humi. I bet if you ask anyone that has bought one they will tell you to go big as you can. And like Puff said you cant go wrong with 5 vegas IMHO

While I happily agree with the other posters about keeping it cheap until you can get a big box, I have to say, $20 for those 7 cigars is a great deal, and a great intro to decent smokes. The fact that a small humi comes with 'em is just gravy. I say go for it. Down the road (when you've sucumbed to the darkside and realise that nothing less than a 500 ct will do, which will happen if you hang out here ;) ) you can use the 20 ct as a remote in your office, or for aging a few choice sticks, etc.
