Keeping my humidor cool....

I have humidity down with different methods, it stays between 65-70rh.

I am concerned with how to regulate the temp. of my humidor. My house is old and breezy, and there isn't be a safe place to keep it cool until fall and winter.

What happens if I don't keep my humi at 70F? (other than hatching larvae at 72F)

What do you folks do to keep your humidor at 70F?

How do you regulate it?

I have central air, but i keep it at about 76F in the summer. Keep in mind that this is an old farm house without insulation, so that means that the ac works hard and the ambient air is different from room to room, but not at 70F in any of them.....

What are some of the humidor mods I've heard about for regulating temp.?

Beatles require high humidity and heat to hatch. I keep my humi's at around 63%rh and 70F.

A wine cooler might be something to look into.

I keep my humidor in my living room from mid Oct through May. Once I start keeping windows open and get a temp fluctuation it goes in the basement where it stays a steady 68-70 degrees. My basement is relatively dry so I can get away with this. If you have an old farmhouse that might have be damp/musty, you might not want to try this since you can develope mold problems.

you called it...i actually try not to breathe when i go down in my basement...

someone around here put in a peltier device in the wall of their humi.

Im not sure who it was or how it works but it works.

if i wanted a humi that has tep regulation id go with a wine cooler system. they look great and are relativly inexpensive. Again, since this isnt an issue for me i know little about it.

there are people here that know all about it. im sure they will be glad tro help. lotta great people here.

Here in AL we deal with humidity and heat so I keep a couple of coolerdors for my main storage to help insulate my stock and keep the temps fairly steady. I put in a couple of the battery powered Oust fans to circulate air from time to time. I keep the coolerdors in my closet since it is closed most of the time and is dark and cooler. I move stock to my main humi's every couple of weeks or so to keep them full which helps maintain the RH in them. I keep my humi's in the coolest area of the house and generally they stay around 70 -72 F. I've gone to beads (65%) in everything.

I actually have all my humi's except one in my office. It stays between 70 to 74F. Living in TX humidity is not a problem. I had a real problem keeping them that temp at home though. I think the wine fridge with the thermal plate is the best way to go. Several guys on this forum have some true works of art with those.

can you point me to those posts?

Ok...I have an Avanti ewc28 with 5 cedar trays for singles storage, and 1lb of 65% beads half way up in the back, and a Hydra in the bottom near the boxes (Hydra set at 61.5%). When the cooler comes on, it keeps my temp between 66-70F. Temperature problem solved, but the cooling unit drops my humidity to about 52-58% the top and 50-54% at the bottom, also creating a lot of condensation in the process, dripping off the plate in the back (which conveniently misses the drain tube and just drips to the bottom). I have a couple of the external Hydra fans in there to mix up the air, so after the cooling unit shuts down, and the beads and Hydra stabilize the humidity back up to 65%, the temp has also risen back up to 71F, and the cooling unit turns back on, dropping my humidity back down to 52-58% at the top and 50-54% at the bottom. so essentially I've solved my temp problem keeping it at 66-70F, but my humidity is all over between 50-65%. What can i do to correct my problem?

1) Did you let everything stabilize? Everything needs to be seasoned first, especially those trays. My cooler took nearly a week to season, though I admittedly probably have a lot more cedar in mine.

2) Your ranges in RH are more than they will be with the fridge full but it they still seem like more than you'll want. An empty space will show much more fluctuation than a full one.

3) What is the ambient temp outside the fridge? Its not all that warm right now so I'd imagine its not outrageous enough to cycle the cooler enough to cause this much RH loss.

4) Do you have a temperature controller? If not, you may want to get one depending on the temperature range of the stock thermostat. Mine is set for +/- 3* meaning it will come on when the cooler gets 3* warmer than the set point. This will cause the cooler to cycle for shorter periods of time. There are digital ones that have +/- 1* ranges as well.

5) The fans that come with the Hydra are helping to distribute the humidity when the Hydra comes on but not much else. You may want put a few Oust fans or computer fans on a timer in there. IMO you need fans to circulate the air at least every few hours. This keeps zones from developing in the fridge. I have two 80mm computer fans that come on for 10 minutes every two hours. Overkill yes, but it works.

1) stabilize..... I have not put any cigars in there yet, i have some empty boxes in there to get some more wood involved and the trays and boxes have been in there at least a week now.

3) ambient temp... the ambient temp outside the fridge has been normal ...i.e. 65-75F

4) temp controller....yes, I'm using this one.....http://www.williamsbrewing.com/CONTROLLER_P762C100.cfm

5) i actually have a couple oust fans on the way....

also....im going to replace the 65% beads (that are behind the trays in the picture) with 70% beads, and take the hydra out....so in the end, im going to try 2lb of 70% beads split between bead tubes in every tray and whatever is left over in 2 different mesh bags (and 2 oust fans) in hopes that will keep the humidity no more than 70%, but never falling below 60 or 65....hopefully...thoughts?

Update

I removed the controller from the equation...not sure what made me think of doing that, but the result is interesting. The internal fan of the unit turns constantly, and the temp/rh is a rock solid 60-61F/59-60%rh. Thats it....I've removed the other fans and the hydra and the result is the 65% beeds and the stock thermostat keeping it at 60/60....I will try the 70% beads when they come in b4 i put any smokes in there, but I wanted to get some thought on the temperature....is 60F too low? How will it affect my smokes?

Never mind the temperature question....having this board to bounce my own thoughts off of led me to a better way to search for the answer I was looking for.....my smokes are now in my coolerdor and resting nicely in 60/60...untill my 70% beads come in...then hopefully i can get a few more % on the rh...if not...ill smoke them at 60%rh

My only thought is to let your stick(s) assume room temperature prior to lighting. My home humi is in a room that stays at around 61* and the Rh at 68%. The issue I tend to have if I get too excited about a stick and smoke it right away is it bulging/splitting as the cigar heats up. This is not isolated to any particular brand and doesn't happen if I let the cigar sit (outside the humi-room) for about an hour or so prior to smoking.

ok sweet...never thought of that, thank you...i guess i could move my next days smokes to my desktop humidor....thanks again! :D

I honestly don't know what to say. It seems all of us frigidor owners have had different experiences in getting our coolers set up. I'm glad you got it figured out though. 60* is not bad at all in my opinion. If it stays there, I see no issue other than excess cycling in the summer.

Just an FYI. Mine ranges from 60-66% RH in its cooling cycle. Average and set point is 63%. My temperature ranges from 61*-65*. It'll never be constant and its something you'll grow to accept.
