hey guys...prety basic...i need a humidor..any suggestions??...looking for something on a relative budget...thinking a 50ct humidor....also thought of getting a jar with the humidity paks

Getting started with your own humidor can be a very exciting time. I can remember my first order from cigar.com. Here is what i would suggest to get started with good storage....

Southport Small Humidor Cherry, about halfway down the page...will give you storage for 40 - 50 cigars as you sample your way to your favorite smokes that you can buy in bulk later.

To humidify your humidor, I highly suggest using the Cigar.com Humi-Care Jar with the Cigar.com 50/50 Humidifying Solution 8 oz Bottle. These will ensure the proper humidity inside your humidor at all times, and help fight mold.

Make sure you season your humidor b4 you put any smokes in it of course, or it will suck the moister out of your smokes. I personally use a paper towel and dampen it with the 50/50 solution, and wipe the interior of the humidor clean. This serves two purposes. One, it will clean your humidor of any wood dust and other dust from manufacturing, and two, if you repeat this twice a day, within about 3 days, your humidor will be ready. Do not soak it wet...but you should see some color change as it becomes dampened. Keep the Cigar Jar in it, as well as your dividers (wipe them too), and you will see that after about 3 days, your humidity will stabilize in it.

Store your smokes in the cellophane if you plan to wait to smoke them at a later day, or if you want to "ready" your smokes for some time later in the week...I suggest you take the cellophane off...but this is really a personal preference, some will disagree with the above and always leave the cello on...but i actually keep two desktop humidors, one for "resting" new cigars where the cellophane is still on, and one for cigars I pull out of my coolerdor for smoking within the next couple of days, in which case I take the cellophane off. And oh boy...opening that humidor and breathing deep is just wonderful.

If you can afford to spring for it...I suggest the Prometheus Digital Hygrometer/Thermometer on that same page....it really makes temp and humidity measurement a breeze, and comes with a magnet or velcro. If not...make sure you calibrate your analog hygrometer before you put any velcro on it.

Hope this helps and welcome to the Forums!! :D

The #1 suggestion you'll get here is go big. WAAAAY bigger than you think you'll need. You'll get a 50ct and be upgrading 2 months later (ask travismaine and Hatchetman  ). That said......a 50ct is really only gonna hold 20-25. You should look for a nice 100ct. Poke around at tampahumidor.com. Great product & great prices.

I agree with hatchetman on the hygrometer/temp gauge. The prometheus one is nice but pricey. If you check at petsmart or walmart in the pet section, you can get a hygrometer/temp gauge made by flukers for ~$20. They are for reptile cages, but are small and work flawlessly.

I agree with this. I just started a short while ago and I bought a 75 count humi and have already filled it. I still have 25 coming to me that I have to find a way of storing them until I get some room.

Coolerdor is the way to go cheap and easy with plenty of storage.
The only downside is you will never convince your wife a cooler in the living room is an acceptable piece of funiture :x

^^^ +9999. I thought I had plenty big enough humi when I started about 3 months ago when I got a 100 count humi. Now that is full and I have more cigars than space. lol. Just ordered another one that is smaller than what I should have, but I like it so that is what I ordered. :) It is the Salerno, and it holds 300. I wanted a min of a 500 count, but oh well. There is always the next one!!!

Here is a pic of the one I got btw:

Nice!

It is true that you will outgrow your humi if your going for a certain age on your smokes.....like, if you want to make sure all your cigars are rested at least 6 months b4 you smoke them...then technically, you want 6 months worth of cigars. This simple equation works for whatever you plug into...also, if you want some extra room for those "special" cigars (i.e.: a couple god of fires), then you want to be able to have that liitle extra space for those...

All in all..everyone is correct..you will outgrow a desktop humidor, but if that is what is in your budget, or you just want to be able to sample different smokes for the next so many months or whatever....then just do what you can. Technically...your best bet is to have a contractor come in and build you a walk-in humidor that is 12x12, get a humidity/hvac controlled super unit thats circulated centrally, and tell Alex to just keep them coming....but...that might not be realistic for you.

P.S.....if the above scenario is realistic for you...please pm my your address...I'll make it a point to come over and help you smoke em!

^^ Also pm me the addy, as you will need "qualified" breaker-iners to get in there for ya to make sure it is good to go! :) And I really love the heartfelt beads for humidification. They are awesome IMHO. I use a 2 ounce one for this 100 count, and have a 4 oz and a 2oz for the 300 count that is on the way. Heartfeltindustries.com has the beads in 65% or 70%, whichever you prefer and they also have a calculator to figre out how much you would need! On the other hand, I used to have a humi-care jar in my 100 count that worked good as well. Just depends on your personal preference! :)

great feedback guys thanks i definitly appreciate it...now that you mention it i can definitely see myself outgrowing the 50ct humidor...i would like to purchase a god of fire or an opus x along with some other really nice smokes and let them age for a bit until i light it up...im almost definitly going with a 300 ct from tampa humidor.com...i am also going to get a starter kit from them with it...looks like all i need to get started on the right track and its a great price.....ill let you guys know if and when i do get it...thanks

GO SOX!!!!!!!!!
