Cigar Oasis mod

I have owned my Cigar Oasis for over two years now. I use it in the coffee table humidor. I decided a couple of months ago to modify the water cartridge and take out the green foam and replace it with the gel (not sure of the correct term atm) stuff that comes in the Xikar humidification jar. I saw the humidifiers the cigar shop I frequent has with the gel in the bottom with a fan on top and thought that mine is using the same principle. I would just need to ensure I don't over fill the cartridge with gel or 50/50. I could only imagine what could happen if this did occur. I'm sure the gel and/ or 50/50 would start shooting out the top of the fan unit on the Cigar Oasis. I attempted a few months ago to remove the top of the cartridge but it is glued or molded together so I quit and forgot about it. Yesterday I remembered what I was trying to do and thought to myself, why not just take a knife and scrape out the foam? So, I did it today:

The method
I took my Swiss Army Knife Climber and rooted around in the cartridge to loosen up the foam and once loosened, I took a butter knife and scraped it out. After scraping real good, I ran the inside of the cartridge through hot tap water and dried the empty cartridge thoroughly. I put a four oz jar in the cartridge along with a two oz jar. I did use the 50/50 solution but only enough to keep the gel moist.

Has anyone else done this or am I the only crazy out there?¿?

Yup,

I think a few guys on here has done that very thing. Instead of using the gel, I think they used RH beads. Members barcochris and maybe kelvin have done this. rmrdaddy may be able to tell you about this also.

Yep. You're crazy! LOL

Just kidding. Many people hate the foam and replaces it with other things. Like DL said I've heard beads being used, but I'm sure the gel works fine too.

I used to gut mine and use polymers thanks to Barcochris. They were great.

I now have a modified oasis that has a huge tank and a wick. Saves me from filling up all the time in the winter (as I listen to it kick on yet again.)

I will take some pictures of mine if I remember in the next couple of days. It's great because i can put a ton of water in it and not have to refill for a long time.

Long time? Weeks? Months? Thanks so much for this info Kelvin, it helps make me better at this stuff.

No problem, brother - I've learned a lot here over the years. Glad to share the info.

Definitely months - the tank is pretty large.

Here are pictures of the humidifier that I use in my cabinet. I actually refilled it this morning for the first time in 2 and a half months.

Did you mod the water cartridge? I just rooted out the extra large one I had to put the gel in but I like that one. How did you do it?

I actually purchased that set up a few years back. I don't even know the vendor - maybe Barcochris can weigh in on it. It does save me a ton of work and I don't worry about it running out in the middle of the winter.

Before this I had gutted my cartridge and was using polymers (again Barcochris used to get them for me.) They held much more water than the foam.

Chris reminded me that we got it from Aristocrat Humidors - don't have a link. Try a search and see what you come up with. I have been extremely happy with this.
