Too Much Humidity

Hello.

I bought (and received) my new humidor a few days ago and I have been trying to put some moisture into it.

When I got it it was at 60% RH, and now it's at 80%. I did the salt test, and it read 74% so I know that the hydrometer is pretty accurate.

Is there a way to bring down the RH?

I don't have any cigars to add to it yet, so there's no hurry to bring down the RH.

Thanks!

Jason

A lot of ways. How do you plan on humidifying it? What humidity are you aiming for? How big is it?

If you're going to use beads, dry those in the refridgerator or with a hair dryer, then put them in the humi. When and if those become saturated to the point they won't absorb any more, repeat the process.

If you're going to use another method, many people use a product called Damprid. Its a dessicant that you should be able to find in the gardening section of a good home store, or maybe in the painting section.

I had a very similar scenario this Summer. I have a 50ct desktop humi. It was sitting around 78%. A wise man offered me the solution "fill it full of cigars", so I did - and it worked! :D

though you dont have any cigars im sure you WANT cigars. ...so there is a little bit of a hurry.

i have found that the beads do wonderful things in humis under a 200ct. Basicly put em in there and let it stableize. if your humidity is too high dont charge them before you put them in. it could take a few days but itll work.

once you get it down to about 70ish add some cigars. If its a 50ct add about 25. this will help even it out as well.

Thanks. I think I'll try filling it with cigars, and if that don't work, try those beads.

I'm trying to get to 72% humidity, and it's a 150 count humidor. I humidified it by using distilled water.

Yes, I want cigars, but am stuck without a way to pay for them. Im waiting on my credit card in the mail, but I could be declined (hopefully not).

The RH should go down some when you put in your cigar...unless they are overly humidified already....with nothing in there though, I'd think the RH will drop on it's own....

The beads should work out great....or even a bolveda bag since it also absorbs moisture, they're a two way humidification unit, they come in 65, 69 and 72%...if the RH level drops, these will put it out until the climiate is the specified RH level. If the climate climbs over the specified rh level, it absorbs it...I love these things...but the beads are killer also....

Jason762,

I'm sorry I never responded to your PM while I was in SF. I was in the process of leaving the city and my computer crapped out on me.
PM me your addy and I'll send out a sampler to help fill the gap in your humi.

72% is much to high (IMHO)
I keep my cigars at 62% I find they smoke & taste better.
In my everyday humidor I use 65% beads & keep them a little dry.
I only add water when the cigars feel to dry -
If I add a few cigars every now and again that almost never happens.

If the humidity is too high, wouldn't it be easier just to leave the lid up for a few minutes?

That probably sounds stupid, but that's what I've done in the past with no problems. I've got all my humis at about 67%.

I've done the same thing!
Well except it was a door not a lid
Now with beads it's much easier than before.
If my humi seems to damp I just put a bowl of beads in the sun for a hour - then back in the humidor - problem solved.

But - the real question here is - should a humidor hold perfect RH
without cigars in it?
I think it's a good question.
I'd bet using beads - full or empty - the humi would be dead on.
It's been a long time since I used a credo.
Do epople still use "PH" is that even what it was called?

CigarSmoka, the RH has finally dropped, but it took aout 2 weeks. Went from 84 to 78.

AxeGod no worries bro. Busy time of your life. Lol, you glad to be out of the city? Thanks for the offer, but I'd feel guilty taking your cigars with nothing in return.

CC, really? Hmm okay. I'll try to drop it down to 65% RH.

Chris, I did leave the lid open, but my house is very damp, so beleive it or not, it stays at 84% RH.
