Are Anejo's especially susceptable to mold?

Last night went to the cigar bar to watch the tigers game, so i broke out one of my Anejo's. As i pulled off the cedar, i immediately said "Oooohh no." then my fiancee says, "eww, its all moldy" so i did the only think i could think of at the time- took a few minutes to "rub" the whole stick down, lol, and got all the mold off. I then proceeded to smoke it and it tasted great!!

when i got home, i checked the other sticks in the humi it was in and all were fine, EXCEPT another Anejo i had in there, same size as the one i smoked. As i pulled the cedar off that one, same condition as the one i just smoked. I also have a robusto Anejo in there thats fine, so i quarantined this one and took some pics...definately mold and not plume, right? anejo's especially susceptable to mold for some reason?

ive read that the cedar holds in the poisture.

i have some 5 vegas type A with cedar on them and have never had this problem. I keep my humi at 65%.

yeah, but i've got cedar on some other sticks in there with no problem, and the humidity isnt that high in this humi...i keep this humi at about 68%

I've heard many people who have never had any mold issues complain about the anejos. I've had mixed results. Many of the Anejos I've had for a long time are fine, but a bunch of sticks I aquired recently have the tell tale anejo mold.

I believe it is a humidity issue. These cigars are more sensitive then most I have seen. I keep my cigars a bit on the dry side, 62-65%. I split a box with a friend of mine about 8 months ago. I kept mine a bit dry and he kept his a bit moist, 70-75%. His have spots and mine don't.

I can't tell for sure if it is the humidity and not other contaminiation, but seems like it to me.

When I got the box of Sharks a couple of weeks ago, I looked at them and saw the same spots you have on your cigars. As a result, I did some research and have learned that this seems to be a problem with Anejos. Mine were kept in excellent conditions at a reputable cigar shop at 70% humidity before I purchased them. I agree that may be too high for these cigars. After wiping off the spots (which wiped off extremely easily), they smoke great. I keep my cigars closer to 65% humidity. I'm not sure how long it would take for the spots to reform, but after two weeks, my Sharks are still clean. So long story short, yes I think they are susceptible to mold, but I don't think it's anything that would detract from their flavor. I would just wipe the cigars off and smoke 'em. I don't think it's the cedar that's the problem, because sharks aren't cedar wrapped.

yeah, thats what i thought, i've got the stick in a ziplock right now just to dry out a bit and i've wiped it off, ill put back in the humi in a bit and drop the rh a bit

This is definitely mold, and it is also true that aged maduro wrappers used for the Anejos cigars can be especially prone to developing mold. Keep them at 65% RH or less, and you'll be fine.
