Different cutting method

I don't remember where I read about it, but I have been using my xicar cutters differently recently and it has made a big difference in the number of caps I have inadvertently damaged by taking too much off. Instead of making a quick clip, I sort of skin the cap off. I put the cigar in the hole and then extend the blades enough to get a grip on the cigar and then turn the cutter without closing it any further. That leaves a nice clean cut and very rarely does any damage. I just wanted to pass the idea along in case others wanted to give it a shot. Anyone else already do this?

I just place the Xicar on the counter and place the cigar inside of it. Then, I squeeze the blades over the cigar until it's snug, and then lift the Xicar up and complete the cut. I never cut too much that way.

I do this as well. It's sort of like the finger pinch method which I'd like to do, but have no fingernails.

I just tried Bigcat's method and it worked great. I'm Converted

When I cut a cigar, I only cut off the wrapper. It is just the very top of the cigar.

I like cutting it Aubrey's way when I have a flat surface available - learned that trick from the great Axegod!

That's right golfcigarjunkie! Biting and spitting out is not the right way. Of course every wife would know that. And I'm talking about cigars. 8)

im a punch kinda guy... unless its a torp

I agree

For me, I find that I prefer a punch for a small ring (under a 40) and I use my Xikar for a bigger gauge. This IMHO allows for the best draw from the cigar.

When I do use my Xikar, I do very similarly to the table method, but I just feel with my finger. Then I visually make sure I am only cutting the cap and no further. I find this has worked consistently for me.

I normally punch unless its a Torp. Although when smoking southern I like to use my trusty Xikar. Nothing better than finding that beautiful little divot that many of the southern smokes have under the cap. A thing of beauty...

I started doing this last week, and I'm finding I get much better cuts.

And here is another one.

Alternate ways of cutting never end do they??
