ceramic blade cutter

I've tried ceramic kitchen knives before and they're incredible, so when I saw a ceramic blade cutter like this one the other day I had to pick it up.

The casing seems cheap (especially for the price most places are asking, I got it for $10), but it holds together well. Though I can't really explain its mammalian form. The blade is, like most ceramic blades, ridiculously sharp. It cut through a cigar like it was made of cheese (the cigar, not the blade). But it did face the issue most single blade cutters will. If you cut too slow, its prone to squashing the last bit as much as cutting it.

One way I like to cut is to just start a cut, and then rotate the cigar so it slices all the way around and just pops the cap off. The blades sharpness excelled there.

All in all, its a fun addition to the collection, if you can find it cheap, but I don't think it'll replace anyone's Xicar any time soon.

i was thinking of getting a ceramic blade chef's knife but i thought that since i was prone to dropping things i would just get a high quality metal one.

do you know if this cutter is strong enough to withstand a drop?

The blade is on a spring trigger, which is small enough to not get triggered by a fall. Also, the edge of the blade is only exposed through the hole, so its only really exposed if its partway between open and closed, which can't happen if you're not holding on to it. When closed, the blade is buffered by plenty of plastic. When open, its still safe. If you open it, drop it, and step on it, then ... maybe it'll break.

Heck, I just chucked it closed and then again open into my kitchen and its just fine :D

And yeah, thats why I don't have ceramic kitchen knives.

I've always wanted a ceramic knife for the kitchen. But the prices are way over my budget.

But on the otherhand, if Xikar came up with one, I might have to get one!

Agreed. A double ceramic blad would be a welcome sight. I wonder if the precision blade marriage needed for a double blade to work well is as possible for ceramic as it is for steel.
