I've search the Forums about these and I am currently thinking of making one... A few questions:

Does the wine cooler always need to be lined completely with spanish cedar? I believe lack the neccessary wood working skills needed to line the cooler.

Would it be possible to use beads for a length of time till funds are available for an Oassis humidfier?

Those are my current questions concerning a frigidor. In my search I was quite impressed with the Frigidor iminaquagmire created although my budget probably is not as large.

Thanks

Hey William,
Welcome Aboard!

In reference to the Fridgeador....
Be sure to get a Thermoelectric fridge, otherwise you will have constant fluctuations(I know that sounds oxymoronic...) in temp and RH. Not a good thing for long term storage. You will also reduce the likelyhood of condensation filling up the bottom of your fridge and seeping into your precious smokes...(paging Dr. Barco....)

And yes, you can use beads quite sucessfully. You may not need an Oasis at all.....Think about the extra $$ you can spend on smokes! :)

There is a wealth of knowledge on this board, many topics have been covered, and some quite recetly. Be sure to use the search function in the top Nav bar, it really can be a great ally.

Again, Welcome!

The Daddy

i dont think the entire thing has to be lined with cedar.

much like a collerdor, a few boxes should work

Thanks for the helpful replies.. Now I just need to decide on a size :)

Go as big as you can afford. Talk to Travismaine he went fro a 75 ct (that he said would be plenty big enough) to a cabinet in like three weeks. LOL

You certainly don't have to line it. You don't have to have any cedar in there. It does help to regulate humidity, but you should be fine if you use enough beads.

As to the beads, I can't really give advice on them as I use the oasis, but I will say that if you experience swings in temperature or the temerature difference between the outside and the inside of the humidor is large, you may want the Oasis later. In the summer, my Oasis had to be refilled every week. I can't imagine what that might do to beads, but plenty of people manage with them. The thermoelectric element does help with not condensing so much, but it still does to an extent.

As for bigger is better, that is definitely true. Mine is full and I'm going to need another soon I think. From what I've seen, the Avanti is about the largest out there. I'm sure there are bigger ones, but I haven't seen them.

The Edgestar (Avanti clone) is actually on sale at http://www.compactappliance.com

iminaquagmire I sent you a pm asking your advice on this topic. Do all wine fridges work and what do you look for. I saw the thermoelectric advice but I am not sure where to look for this in the details. Thanks

Most don't say whether they're thermoelectic or not. Some pretty good giveaways are a grate on the bottom, a square indentation on the back, and bottles facing sideways.

Thanks for the help, I will keep on looking for the right one. The one you listed is in the USA and does not have an outlet in the frozen north. Now I know to look for the crate and what to ask when I see one in the store.
