Yes, size does matter. I'm by no means a seasoned cigar smoker, I'm truly a beginner, however, it is common sense to me that the different sizes of the smokes make for different tastes and experiences.

More filler, less filler, more wrapper, ring gauge, etc.

I need a 101 on what the sizes and styles do for the experience.

:hypercolor: <-- oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, I'm getting schooled!! Yipee!!!

wrapper = flavor

(rapper = flava flave??)

well... gernerally speaking. yes you get some flavor from binder and filler (thats why there are so many different blends) but most of the flavor comes from wrapper.

oh crap, here comes some math.

lets assume that the wrapper leaf is 1/64 of an inch thick. ( its probably less but for arguments sake....)

we also will have to assume that the only part of the cigar actually being smoked is the infanatly thin spot there the fire meets the leaf. this has only surface area.

the circumference of a circle is twice the radius times Pi. (3.14159..... whatever)

the area of a circle is Pi times the radius squared. (pie are square... )

you have a ring of 50 vs a ring of 30

the ring of 50 has a circumference of about 2.45 inches and since it is 1/64th of an inch thick this gives us a surface area of about 0.0383 in sq. you compare that to the surface area of the entire cigar ( and that is 1.917 inches sq surface on the foot.) this gives you the fraction .0383/1.917

the ring of 30 has circumference of 1.47inches and a wrapper surface area of .0230 inches sq. the surface area of the entire foot of the cigar is .6899 in sq. this gives us the fraction of .0230/.6899

when we devide out the fractions (50 ring cigars fraction = 0.0199
and 30 rings fraction = .0333) we see that the ratio of wrapper to leaf is higher in the smaller ring cigar.

im glad something stuck around since high school. mmmmm. mmmmath

anyway, there are "problems" with a smaller ring cigar. Remember the post "puffs per minute"? this post is all about how fast to smoke or how slow to smoke so the cigar does not over heat.
http://cigar.ambackforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=51870

Small ring cigars have a tendency to heat faster; therefor you have to smoke slower. If you can smoke slower, in theory, you will get more flavor out of a small ring cigar than a large one. (if you smoke slower youll also get more flaver out of a larger ring vs. smoking quickly)

so break out your petit carona, kick back, smoke slow and relax... this is a cigar we are talking about, not geometry.

come to think of it... (just past the time to edit)

that entire math thing was incorrect. i dont wanna fix it, but if i were to fix it here is how it would go:

the surface area of the wrapper would be ((25/64 x 25/64) Pi) - ((24.5/64 x 24.5/64) Pi) for the 50 ring and for the 30 ring it would be ((15/64 x 15/64 ) Pi) - ((14.5/64 x 14.5/64) Pi)

i think this would be the correct way to do it. the way i had it before would be an approximation.

so much for that math thing stickin around since high school...

WHAT WAS I THINKIN?!!? :throwrock:

 mus...t....zzt.. :? ....smo..ke........slo..w.e...r.. :duh: .z...z..zzzt.........

you just blew my mind...not because of the math...i could follow it ( ), but because you ACTUALLY answered my question, and thats refreshing.

...LOL...i loved it...and thank you....

im just giving back. When i was a newbie this forum helped me. now im a cigar junkie. Im just treating others the way i was treated.

...it was the flava flave comment wasnt it?
