Coolerdor Advice

Well, I've decided that for me the best thing to do right now for storage is to build a coolerdor. A 300+ count humidor is a hair outside my budget for now, and I just prefer making things myself anyways! I've searched around the net and found a few good guides, but they didn't answer a few specific questions that I had, so I was hoping a few of you vets would know the answers.

Is there a brand that is better for this than the others? I imagine there could be differences in the quality of the seal, and I've seen some coolers that came with slots to put dividers in and some that didn't. I would like one that came with them.

In pictures I've seen, there are some guys that just lay the cooler flat and have cigar boxes stacked to the lid, and it seems like there would be major circulation problems with that. Am I right here, or is that practice standard and acceptable?

Finally, what kind of storage capacity am I looking at with a 70-100qt cooler?

Any help with this stuff is much appreciated. I hope to get this guy put together over the weekend and start filling up ASAP!

I've had a few coolers & between simple & complex -

I just stacked boxes in it - filled it.
I used beads to keep the RH right.
I did put a rack to keep everything off the bottom.
In my cooler the bottom sometime got dampish.
As for brand - no idea?

Ditto what CC said. Now, I haven't had a problem with dampness. I have a Coleman 125 quart. I can hold probably 15 boxes in there depending on the size of the boxes. For circulation, Glade (I think) makes an Oust Fan. They intend for it to have their scents in a fan powered by battery. It won't overheat the cooler because it cycles and it's a very small fan, but enough to circulate the air. Obviously, don't put the scenty stuff in there...that'd be bad. As for prepping it, you might need to get the plasticy smell out. If so, fill it with water and a little bit of bleach. Let it sit overnight. Empty it and rinse it out. Should work for you. You can also put some baking soda in a tupperware to help with the smell too. I believe you can google coolerdor and get some good ideas as well. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Yeah with the fan make sure you dont use the stinky stuff it will just mess up the banana Phillies. I have a coolerdor set upright with shelves. It's the pinacle of white trash technology. Love it! As stated go with beads to keep the rh set. Oh and samples should be sent to those of who answered your post! :D

Thanks for the help guys! I've got a half pound of 65% RH beads plus a digital hygrometer on the way, and I'll be scoring a cooler and an oust fan later today.

I like elidog's idea about samplers for you guys.

Do you like peach, watermelon, or sour apple?

Hey I know my dad uses a cooler and it holds about 5 or 6 hundred. He uses beads and has it almost stacked to the top. There is room in between each stack to allow circulation. I also know he leaves the drain plug open and has not has a change in humidity so it seems to be fine. The smokes are good out of the cooler too.

I will add one thing. If you feel that the seal is not that tight; you can run duct tape along all of the seams to make them more snug. I did it for mine and it has a very tight seal; I would definately say air tight.
