A great new cigar. . . .

You may remember not too long ago when I posted about the renewal of my membership in the J.C. Newman Cigar Connoisseurs Club, a club I joined a few years ago. This year J.C. Newman kicked their membership benefits up to "notches previously unknown" (thank you, Emeril) by gracing us with four cigars and the usual nicely designed, high quality t-shirt, which will give years of wear. This t-shirt will go nicely as the first layer in the wintertime, since it's a heavy cotton.

But this was about my first try at one of the new cigars, the Cuesta Rey Centro Fino with a sun grown wrapper.

I kept these in my humidors to stabilize them after receiving the shipment about a month ago, placing the smallest one, a nice robusto, in my Havana Pocket Humidor knowing I'd test smoke one soon.

Tonight was the night. After arriving at Grand Central Terminal and exiting just after midnight, I went out the Lexington Avenue and 43rd Street entrance and noticed that it was a chilly night in the city, despite the summer-like conditions during many of the recent day time periods. There was plenty of time and the mood was right for a nice cigar before going in to work.

I chose the perfectly constructed Cuesta Rey Centro Fino Sungrown from the humidor, cut it and lit it at 0003 hours. The draw was also perfect, and as is usually the case with cigars made with a sun grown wrapper, the first few puffs were accompanied by a nice blast of strong flavors.

As I walked up Lexington Avenue toward one of my smoking spots across from work, I realized that wearing my dashiki on this chilly night had been a mistake. Hopefully the morning will warm up quickly after I leave here. Nonetheless, I had a cigar to smoke, and it's not like it's winter any more around here, so I decided to brave it, and hope for a less windy spot when I reached my "designated smoking area." You have to be formal about those things in NYC these days.

Throughout this wonderful 45 minute smoke a symphony of rum cake, currants, raisins, black coffee and Upstate New York camp fire wood played upon my palate. I think this is a cigar even a regular Cuban cigar smoker might find rather nice on a rare occasion. It appears that the after-boom complaints about too much strength, not enough flavor might be in the process of being addressed slowly but surely as manufacturers seek to please the true, long term cigar smokers, the sincere cigar smokers, and not the faddists.

Folks, I think that J.C. Newman has a winner here in the Cuesta Rey Centro Fino Sungrown, and if you haven't joined the club yet, $15 gets you four of these cigars, the one I smoked, three larger than that, and a really, really nice t-shirt.

I'm going to let two of the other three rest for a while, at least until about halfway through the football season, then I'll let you know what a little age has done to them. I'm thinking that it can only do good things, judging from this first experience. And as for the other one, that'll go to my friend DocBarry when I see him next. He loves those sun grown wrappers. :D

It's time for me to renew my membership to the J C Newman cigar club. Thanks for the reminder, Bloof. I look forward to the new T shirt, last years model has received plenty of wear. The new cigars are an added incentive.

Thanks for stopping by, BahstinBill. This is proof positive that the AmBack web site works. When a dyed-in-the-wool veteran cigar smoker can come to this humble web site and get his reminder about joining a worthwhile cigar related venture, it works!!!

You won't be disappointed with four cigars and a high quality t-shirt, and if I know your tastes correctly, the cigars will actually please you. If not, they make great trading fodder!!!

Good to see you. Tell the gang I love 'em and I miss 'em.

There's a lot of interesting fodder on this site. Wish I could spend more time here. :D

As always, reading your posts is a high in and of itself. Keep up the good work. :) :!:

If the temp ever warms up here in Bahstin, I'll be able to wear the new T shirt. I can't wait to show off this new fashion statement.

Upstate New York wood? Now that's specific.

I tried this cigar three times, and I really wanted to like it, but just don't. Maybe one more shot since Bloof gave it such high marks.

Mike

Actually, if I remember correctly, the old adage is any cigar that Bloof gives high marks to, no other self respecting cigar smoker would be caught dead smoking. In other words, listen to Bloof and "bet the other way." :D

Oh, and Bill, believe me, ANY time that you stop by to visit the site and put up a post or two is most appreciated. I too wish I had time for other web sites, but alas an occasional peek is all I can manage at this time. Thanks to both of you for continuing to think of amback.com. Your input is truly enriching and welcome.

Bloof,

Our posts may be welcome, but enriching??? This may be the only time that mike and I offer posts devoid of political commentary.

Bill

I, too, am a member of the club. It's time for me to renew anyway!

Thanks,

I thought the Cuesta Rey Centro Fino Sungrown was pretty much the same as the Chateau Fuente SG. I prefer the Chateau Fuente and it's a bit cheaper.

Thank you for the tip, zdpin, and a hearty welcome to amback.com. I haven't smoked those since the 90's, and found them way too strong for me, worthy of a lot of age, but I loved the flavor. I'll remember that next time I'm cigar shopping, because I've always longed to have a few more around. As for those Centro Finos, it's at least worth it to join the club, get the t-shirt and four cigars for $15.

I'm definitely going to check out those Fuente Sun Grown's again though, and I'm glad to hear they're still cheap. DocBarry loves them.

honestly, it's only a few bucks difference at holts.com. it looks like the CR's come in 10 packs (36.95 for the robusto) and you can get the Chateaus in boxes of 20 for $70 ($5 shipping via ground should have them from Pa to your doorstep next day).

I find them to be nice medium bodied smokes and at $3 per stick a very nice choice for a short evening smoke

Who are you guys?

Most of you sound like a bunch of baby neo-cons, except for BostnBill.

Tiny Tim. are you related to Tom Thumb?

i recently had a cuesta rey natural belicoso 11 and really enjoyed it. it made me want to revisit it's sun grown cousin so i ordered them this week. if it comes close to the chateu flavor i might have a new everyday smoke. $41 from holt's make's 'em about $4 a stick

Yeah, Holt's has always been old reliable. DocBarry likes to use them for purchases, too.

Speaking of Cuesta Rey's sun grown cousin, I had one the other day on one of my trips walking around Manhattan. Very, very nice. It's been a few months since I got the sampler with the renewal of my J.C. Newman Cigar Connoisseurs Club membership, and the latest smoking confirmed that they continue to age well.

Nice day up our way today, huh?

picture perfect. looks like the next few will be carbon copies. what a great weekend to have such nice weather. i hope you're enjoying it

Enjoying it very much. Maybe with a cigar in a little while. We certainly have been blessed with a mostly fantastic summer, none too hot, and appropriately, but not too rainy.

bloof,

after some research it's clear to me (imho anyway) the cuesta rey sg is simply not the equal to the chateau fuente. i like 'em, but not nearly as much and i gave 'em a chance (smoked 'em with an espresso and sambucca which is a geat pairing).

email me an addy and i'll mail you one of each if you want to try your own taste test
