This is the Van55 HCF rating system. the reason it is was adopted is cause the 100 point system is hard to use. what is the diiference betwen a 89 and a 90? I think it is a good idea if we use this. I think it gives a much better clue as to what you think of the cigar.

6 smoke rings -- a "classic" cigar or one destined to become a classic
5 smoke rings -- an exceptionally good cigar
4 smoke rings -- an above average cigar
3 smoke rings -- an average cigar
2 smoke rings -- a flawed cigar
1 smoke ring -- practically unfit for smoking

I don't give separate points for connstruction, appearance, taste, finish, etc. I do deduct in my mind for poor draw, poor burn, imperfect wrapper, short finish etc., but in the end it is the overall smoking experience that I rate. Incidentally, there are no fractional smoke rings. Try blowing half a smoke ring and you'll see why.

alot of people cant tell the difference between an 89 and a 90.

ill give you that.

in fact ill give you all the reasons you gave us on going to that system. I think though, that going to one system only may not be a good idea. The Van55 HCF rating system may work. But i am partial to my system and chrisgunther is partial to his and PuFf is partial to his.

im willing to include that system in my catalog as long as i keep my old system as well.

I think Chris and Kevin like the Van system best because they dont have to remove their shoes to continue counting.

I agree, most people including myself wouldn't know the difference between an 89 or 90 (or an 8.9 or 9.0 on the Kuziscale). I guess the main reason I use a 100pt system is it tells which I like more between cigars in the same category. For instance, if you have 5 cigars all with 4 smoke rings, which did you like more? A point variation between each merely shows how they rank in your opinion.

Ok honestly, the reason I'd have a problem adopting a new scale is I'd have to change all my rating sheets  but I could easily add the smoke rings rating to the top or bottom of my reviews as Kuzi suggested.

I was jsut thinking that including this in your review would make it easier for someone to pick out what they should try.

Why would you want to differ in what cigar you like more? aren't we reviewing each cigar on its own merits?

Anyways it was just a an idea, everybody feels comfortable in there own system.

Chris.

P.S Steve......That was not nice......LOL

the more i think about it the more i like the 6 ring system.

ill use both. a beginner will like the 6 ring system and some people that want more in depth will like the scale i was using.

but if i am going to stick to my scale also i need to be more detailed on why i gave it what i did. often ill be rereading and ill think to myself "why did i give that a 7 for the burn when i didnt mention any burn issues?"

nothing wrong with reviewing the review proscess.

Mad Dog!!!!!!!!!! HAhahahahahah! Good one Kevy!

I've been trying to incorporate this system with the system from cigaradvocate. I think the combination helps to give the best description and rating possible for the raters' intent.
