All the cigars I've had of this line have been huge and sent to me by friends. This afternoon I went digging in Desk Top III during my second tasting of Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit and decided I wanted something big. At the bottom, laying lengthwise were some cigars I've been keeping for a long time. I noticed the CAO Black 8x50 down there and remembering it fondly, pulled it out.
I hesitated to smoke it, because it was my last one, and I don't know when I'll smoke one of these again, but you've got to smoke it sometime, and as Vince likes to say, "tomorrow never comes," and he's right.
I've heard conflicting reports about this cigar, some saying it was discontinued, some saying the line's been revived, or even some saying that it never really died, but they are rare, and they are nice. By the way, they're also dirt cheap.
I lit this cigar at 1540 hours and noticed right away that there was something wrong with the draw. Nonetheless, the flavor profile was typical of CAO Black, licorice, coffee and some chocolate all the way through. When I went out to sweep the back deck and stairs it canoed badly due to the windy day, and took quite a while to get it straight, but the smoking was generally good all the way through.
It did go out about two or three times, and at 1805 hours when I picked it up to take a couple last puffs, with only about one quarter to one half of a smokeable inch left, it had gone out again, and I decided that was it.
If you're looking for a rich tasting, full bodied, kick you in the head cigar, this isn't it. What it is, is a smooth, relaxing smoke that won't leave you feeling like Earnie Shavers came out of retirement to hit you with that sneaky right hand, and it will leave you with a few bucks in your pocket, . . .
if you can find 'em.
