so im curious if a cigar will set off a smoke detector? to be safe and not set them off i decided i would take the battery out, but no batteries in ANY of the smoke detectors in my apartment. That sure made me feel safe, especially since my last apartment burned to the ground. I am still curious if anyone knows if a cigar will set the detectors off. I don't smoke in here but i would like to on rare occasions.

I dont smoke in my home I do have a smoking room for that, but when I go to a hotel we cover the smoke alarm with a plastic bag, that way no harm no foul , I dont know if you want to do that at home all the time, ?? enjoy, Vince

If you are anywhere between standing on top of it blowing smoke into it and about four or five feet away, it will set the detector off. If you are further away than that, it will not. If you are further away, and you are with one or more cigar smokers besides yourself, move even further away from the smoke detector.

I wouldn't worry about it going off unless you are deliberately blowing tons of smoke onto it. Just crack open a window if you are in an apartment that allows smoking. If not, athough it may not be in a location you can sit and be comfortable, you could blow the smoke out the vent over the stove. If I happen to be cooking while I'm smoking that's what I do.
