My Goldens ( Bogart & Amber) busted my butt today running in my back yard. I was smoking a Cohiba Siglo VI with a cocktail, and tried to keep up with the Goldens. A mistake. They undercut my legs and down I went. Never spilled a drop of my drink and only lost the ash of the cigar. Unfortunately my shoulder paid the price.
I hope the ice works. As I was on the ground- the Goldens were licking my face. One has to love Goldens.
How is Fu Man Chu?

I have a Golden as well Malone, her name is Molly. She is my running companion and has on occasion cut my legs out from under me. Ussually happens so quickly I'm on the ground before I realize I'm bouncing. She is a great dog though, and can't stand the thought of me running without her. If I'm wearing running shoes and shorts she's at my side and won't take no for an answer.

I have 3 Border Collies that are working dogs and are almost always with me when I'm out. They are incredible athletes, they will leave with me in the morning when I'm horseback, will travel 30-40 miles before returning home then be ready to play at a drop of a hat. Their presence in a pasture put the cattle in a whole different frame of mind. Moving and sorting cattle, locating them, all becomes easy with a good dog at your side. They never request a day off, and ready to go day or night.

My biggest problem is keeping weight on my dogs. With all the running I can't hardly feed them enough.

I'm going to have to reconsider my activities though. I had not thought about running with a cocktail and cigar in hand. It will give another meaning to telling the wife, "hey babe, I'm going for a run." She'll be wanting to curtail those activities I'm afraid.
 
Weight on dogs is hard. When I was goose & duck hunting in 1970-1980 in Maryland- I worked Labs ( Chocolate & Black) six hours a day in the field.Every hour I would feed a dog 2 cups of a 50/50 mix of dry food and can food for energy spent. I always had gallons of well water available in bowls. My dogs always kept their working weight. Around 75 lbs for labs. Non-hunting season- rations were 1/3.
I wish I had the room for Border Collies- my favorite.

My dog Tucker (see avatar) is not a working dog. Our problem is keeping weight off. He is soon to be nine years old and has been a great companion to our two boys. (10 and 7). We speciffically chose a Golden since we had an 20 month old child. It was a decision we have never regretted.

It is going to be very tough when we loose him.

Surely without any major health problems he should be around for about five, six years to come, no??
 
I'm not sure Bloof. I was thinking about 12 years. Big dogs don't last as long as little dogs but of course, he has lead a pampered life. :wink:

That's true, but I was also thinking at least 12. Of course, one never knows the day of their own death, or a dog's, cat's, pig's, whatever, but I was hoping that barring any major health problems or a sudden tragedy, that at least 12, hopefully 14, 15, even with a big dog. With the life he's led, I'm counting on the upper range. :wink:

Like I said my 10 year old was 20 months when we got Tucker and we have several pictures of the two "puppys" sharing bowls of cereal and great adventures in the back yard.

It's been a game we play whenever we are looking a pictures of Matthew has a toddler, to find Tucker in the picture. He's always there.

I have had great success over the years getting maximun like from large dogs 75 to 100 lbs. My oldest Golden ( Bogart ) is 10 and weighs 85 lbs. No people food- ever. A senior dry food. 1 1/2 cups in the morning and 1 1/2 cups at 5PM. A small spoonful of high guality wet food plus a joint pill once a day. Every six months to the vet for a full physical. The vet and I expect 15 years. With Goldens I strongly recommend a companion golden that is younger and the opposite gender. Bogart is a male 10 years old. Amber is female and is 4 years old. Bogart is a typical American Golder from championship lines. Amber is a Scottish/British Golden ( smaller and stockier). Both are smart and can be taken anywhere. Amber, even though she is 2 inches shorter weighs 90 lbs. Amber gets 1 cup twice a day.
They are well exercized and get plenty of nap time.

I kinda, sorta, take the same sort of thing, sometimes several times a day. I do have a back problem, y'know. :wink: :hearseespeak: :dunno:

My friend, I'm glad you like the Cohiba Siglo VI. I always come back to Cohiba after smoking adventures with any other sticks. For spice and flavor in a smoke IMO they are the one! Another favorite that comes to mind is the Romeo y Julieta Robusto Exhibicion No.4. A good friend of mine always stops by with a few when we go out sailing (we are on the boat today and FuManChu, is posing as lookout and greeting all passing sloops with cheery salutes, i.e., excited barks.

On a day like this, mid 80s and a little breezy, all the girls in bikinis and assorted sailware think he is gorgeous and quite a few blow kisses and wave -- this, of course gets the attention of "Madame Captain"- my wife- who thinks I am doing all of this for my own benefit :roll:) I'd be safer if Fu stuck with pelicans.

I think this Robusto contrasts nicely with the Siglo VI as a companion smoke. It has a fresh tangy flavor, creamy and quite rich .It has those woody notes that hit the back of your palette. The finish just explodes with power. A great smoke to relax with.

By the way, my wife wants to know how your wine search is going.

Wine search is poor. Americans do not understand Fench & Italian wines. This may take some time.I'm dealing with amateurs.They think California when I mention Saturne. Very poor.
