Lately, I have been having a hard month dealing with certain changes in my life.....

Lately when I smoke a cigar, The experience seems to be much deeper than usual...by that I mean it seems easier for me to get lost in the smoke and be free from troubled thought...which I desperately need a break from
I have been noticing a lot more in cigars than I have before....changes in character, flavor, aromas etc...I have been completely engorged by the smoke and really taking my time, which is what I am practicing to do with every cigar I smoke because to me that is what the essence of cigar smoking is....
Some of the quotes I have really grown to appreciate...

"A good cigar is as great a comfort to a man as a good cry to a woman."
-- E.G. Bulwer-Lytton Darnley, 1845

Lately...this one has especially hit home -

"Given the choice between a woman and a cigar, I will always choose the cigar."
-- Groucho Marx

But the one that hit's home the most:

"The end of a good smoke is a little saddening. In some regard, it's a bit like losing a best friend who had time to sit and listen. ~ ZenWarrior

I feel I will be smoking a lot more than usual this month..(I can't believe I said that!) But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!

"the cult of the cigar" :D

I grasp your concept CS.

When I smoke alone...it is almost a meditative experience. The smoke, the calm, the smell...the taste.

Smoking a cigar doesn't calm me though...I have to be calm "to" smoke. If I'm upset or excited...I can't smoke. It might have to do with the fact that I'm an ex cigarette smoker. I don't want to use the cigar as a crutch.

Thor,
We must be living on parrallel life plains! Troubles in my life have really begun to wear me down this month. I find myself feeling overwhelmed with some of the simplest tasks. I wish smoking a cigar would totally take my mind off of things, but it doesn't. I would say the only times my mind is free is jamming out with a bunch of my friends and creating music, or fishing, in the middle of the lake, no one can touch me or my smoke, and it's all good. Thinking I need to give Malone a call and head out for some healing! Maybe we both need it, or he's just busy. Either way, My thoughts are with you Thor, hope the difficult ends of our journies end sooner then later!

Hey smoka, I know exactly what that's like.

I normally smoke on my own outside on my deck around 9 or 10 pm. It's just a great way to wind down and relax. There have been times though when I'm so stressed that I just can't concentrate on my cigar and by the end of the night, I regret even lighting it up because I find myself not enjoying it to its fullest potential.

I try to treat every cigar smoke as a retreat from everyday life and time that I can just spend with myself thinking and what not.

It's definately hard to get my mind off of things...sometimes a cigar won't do it, So I'll put on my jogging shoes and just go....Running it out always seems to help a little....

CS,
Many things have been written about cigars. Perhaps this quote below, says it for me.

"While smoking a cigar, we are in the presence of eternity. The tobacco reminds us of the earth, from which it and we came. As with ourselves, the life of some cigars is short, while others last a while longer, but in the end all are consumed. But the smoke, ah, the smoke! The smoke drifts gently heavenward on its quest to combine with the great eternal oneness." --Sined Yar Maharg

My favorite thought and one I have often told to folks that I represent is the following: "If you can distinguish between good advice and bad advice, then you don't need advice." 8)

Some of us must be having problems at the same time. I'm dealing with finals that are coming up (yes finals after only 5 weeks). I've got a big problem with a person I work with. SHe is threatened by me and feels she needs to tell the boss that I'm a slacker and I don't get my work done. And he believes her without even consulting me in this. This is the very last thing I need right now.

THe very first thing I need is a cigar! Smoking alone can be a kind of, dare I say emotional thing for me. I stop worrying about work and school and things I don't have time to think about pop into my head. Lately I've been thinking a whole lot about my grandfather while smoking. I really miss him a lot.

I don't have a quote about cigars but they are the best kind of therapy for me.

Good story Cobsgirl, Feel for you missing your grandfather! I'm sure he's right there with you when your smoking that cigar. :) Keep the faith!

My .02

My smoking habits have changed over the years.
one thing most of all!
WHen I would head out to a gathering (cigar party)
I was always taking the best I had or high end smokes.
Now I keep the special cigars for when I am doing nothing.
I have found that if I go si by the river and smoke a "Special" cigar it can really move me.

When out with friends I hardly have the time to pay the attention the cigar deserves.

If I take a nothing day & smoke something Special it can make a day I will never forget!

One of my favorite qoutes;

"My first wife said it was her or the cigars!"

This may be an "urban legend" but its a good story anyway. The way I heard it it went like this:

Years ago Groucho Marx hosted a show called "You Bet Your Life." How it went is not important, however, he would always spend a minute or so getting to know each contestant.

So, on one show he is introducing a man as follows ("G" is for Groucho; "C" is the contestant):

G: So tell me, are you married?
C: Yes, I am.
G: Do you and your wife have any children?
C: Yes, we have 12 children.
G: 12 children! How do you explain that?
C: Well, I love my wife.
G: I love my cigar too, but at least I take it out once in awhile!

rumor has it that right after groucho said that the station went off air for a couple min lol

There are a lot of famous quotes out there, but two of my favorites came from friends:

You can't draw a line and say it's "Cuba vs. The Rest Of The World." A good cigar is a good cigar, regardless of it being Cuban, Dominican, or Nicaraguan. - JFG

CAO Moontrance is enchanting...if you like it when the vanilla fairy drinks crap loads of amaretto then takes a liquor shit on a corn muffin. - ABogad
