Ashton VSG's not as good as they once were?

Smoke everything: Padron 1964s, Ashton VSGs, Onyx Reserves, Sancho Panza Double Maduro Quiote's, Opus X, Peterson's...

Anyone noticed that VSG's don't exibit that special taste that separated them from the rest a few years back? Once had a box of Enchantments 2-3 years ago that were near black in color and remains the best box of VSG's I've ever smoked....

They turned about 24 months ago in my opinion. They used to be just amazing but now I lost interest. They also age horribly.

I have to agree that they don't age particularly well. But the exception is the original "Rounds". I had one of the original release "Rounds" the other day and it was sublime.

The 10 pack robustos are quite good. If you see them around, try one. They are just as good as any VSG I have had.

I used to smoke the Trey Mystic (sp?) a lot!
Misa & I hunted them all the time.
After going all Cuban for a few months and then smoking one of the VSG I was surprissed at how much I hated them!
Nasty tasting - not sure why this happens, but now it is the case with most NC's :?

I ahve come to find most first release cigars are always much better than the same smoke after a period of time!

Althou some cigars (liek the Monte #2) have come back around - for a long time they were kind of flat & I avoided them.
The 04 boxes are very nice, not like what they were but still very good. (sorry for the thread jacking!)

CC - I would imagine a simple case of an evolving palatte, coupled with an acquired taste. Interesting though, on how raising the bar spoils one for those lower hurdles.

Bulz, thanks for the info on the rounds. I have a couple aging in the humidor but I am too afraid to smoke them in fear of not being able to find anymore. I also have an estate reserve (VSG filler and binder with an OpusX wrapper) I am anxious to smoke this one for the same reasons.

I have yet to come across an ER, but I have quite a few rounds and they do not suck.

Yeah - there is something that changes in the palatte after 30-60 days of all Cuban cigars.

I find a metal taste in NC's I had never tasted before
On the other hand I spend less smoking Cubans than I did smoking pre-non's.
I can get $5-smokes that will stand up against any $10 non
Of course that is just my opinion!

agreed, i have been thinking about making the switch but my current problem is my huge stash of NC. It might start getting sold off. I could live on Choix supremes and they are in the $5 range[/quote]
