Cigarette smoke versus Cigar smoke - Study

Dr. Richard Hurt, director of the Nicotene Dependance Center at the Mayo Clinic. Says:

Yet if scientists are right and nicotene is the Devil in cigars, then it is a decidedly underachieving one. Although physicians report anecdotal evidence of addicted cigar-only smokers, such cases are rare. (How often do you see cigar smokers puffing feverishly in front of a nonsmoking office building?) Far more commen is the cigarette smokers who havw to cigars and inhale, says Dr. Richard Hurt, director of the Nicotene Dependance Center at the Mayo Clinic. "Half of the nicotene [from cigars] is in freebase form," he says. "If you inhale, it is really potent." This point is crucial to understanding the health risks of cigars. The reason cigar smokers need not inhale is that the nicotene-containing smoke is alkaline and can therefore be absorbed through the linig of the mouth. Cigarette smoke, in contrast , is acidic - meaning it must be inhaled into the lungs for full absorption.

Whatever the case, I know if I smoke cigarettes, I have no endurance in a house fire. I quit a year ago, and since I took up cigars, fulltime, I have NO problem.

there was another interesting aritcle in cigar magazine a couple of months ago that had some interesting statistics. Namely that the casual cigar smoker is only .02% more likely to die as a result of their cigar smoking. For cigarette smokers the number is signifcantly more.

Well, I know we don't fall under that .02%
And yeah, cigarette smoking and physical activity never mixed well with me either.

I have read simular studies, amazing how we don't see any of these reported in the mainstream media. I have been smoking cigars for 20+ years, I have not missed a day of work due to illness in over 23 years, the day that I missed back then had nothing to do with smoking, I was diagnosed with gout, as far as I know they haven't linked that with smoking, yet :D But if you listen to all these so called experts I should be half dead, and half the teeth should have rotted out by now. So I am going to keep on doing what I'm doing and probably live long enough to piss on all their graves

Another reason cigarettes are more harmful than cigars is the amount of time people hold a lit cigarette near their face. The only time a cigar is close to your face is when you puff. Plus the whole inhalation factor. (I read that in either JAMA or NEJM).

Eh I smoke about 2 sticks a day and notice no differnce with cardio fitness level.

Anyways who the hell wants to live forever? Rotting in some bed, and needing others to wipe your ass! A lot of these non-smoking nutbags are not in touch with reality that everyone dies, and people that are health nuts get cancer too.

Thanks to CC for posting this, but I DID notice that the doctor's name was Richard Hurt.

Dick Hurt? A smoking doctor? Really? :dunno:

At any rate, I must chime in to affirm what Rory said, with my No. 1 example of how wrong the politically correct can be sometimes.

Eubie Blake, famous jazz pianist, smoked three packs a day and lived to be 100. Andy Kaufman, famous nut job comedian, didn't smoke, supposedly lived a very "clean" life and died of cancer at 35.

As for cigarettes, notwithstanding Mr. Blake's amazing tolerance, they are an abomination, and not a TRUE tobacco product, like cigars.

Also, in my own personal experience, I have known people who have smoked many things in their lives, and I myself have been smoking "some things" for 31 years now. The ONLY people I have ever known to have a wind problem were those who included cigarettes in their daily diet, or smoked only cigarettes.

Nuff said. Ladies and gentlemen, light your cigars, and thanks to CC for finding the information to affirm what we all know about what we know and love. Fhine, fhine, pttttttemium cigahhhzz.

Just to add to what has already been said...

I have smoked cigars for nearly 8 years now. I have never touched a cigarette and never will - they are chemically enhanced sticks of crap that are manufactured in order to get as many people as possible addicted to them.

As we all know, cigars are totally different. I may add on average, me and my boys cover up to 40 miles a day with a fully loaded burgen and our personal weapons, and I have no problem with that.

We all have to die some day, lets just enjoy the ride! 8)

I wish I had the exact quote from George Burns (a man who smoked many cigars in his day and seemingly lived forever)

"My doctor told me that if I did not quit smoking cigars I would die, I tend to believe that if I had taken his advice I might not have been around to attend his funeral"

being an ex cigarette smoker, I can say that in no way do cigars equate to those nasty cancer sticks. I quit cigarettes over 2 years ago and returned to cigar smoking around 6 or 7 months ago. I have never felt the need for a cigarette and never feel as though I "HAVE" to smoke a cigar.
