I went to my other local tobacco shop (which is pretty crappy....pretty REALLY crappy) and walked into their walk-in humi and saw a small ziploc bag containing a small box of Romeo y Julieta Cubans! The box was made out of wood and had a see-through top and had the "Republica de Cuba" stamp on it. On the bottom was "Habanos" and "Hecho en Cuba" but it was pretty faded...it looked pretty old I guess. Other than I couldn't see anything whjich specified what size it was....the cigars looked relatively small...shootin' from the hip, I'd say it was about 4 1/2 x 38? The whole box (which appeared to be unopened as the "offical stamp" was unbroken and it looked to be full) was being sold for $49....any thoughts?

Romeo y Juliet box of true cubans will fetch quite a substantial amount more then 49.00 US. It is very illegal for that shop to sell cubans or bring them back for resale, so, bascially not only is this place bad in your opinion, but the owner is as dumb as they come! :D Don't buy the box, and if you want to sample some cuban cigars, I suggest hanging out on the boards, making some posts, and finding who the people to ask are, then maybe if you have earned the prize, you may be able to just ask and get a few sent to you!!

Enjoy, and smoke 'em if ya got 'em! 8)

I second what Eclipse and bildo said.

You know the old saying "If it seems too good to be true..."?

not only is it too good to be true, but the most obvious way to spot fakes is what people call "the glass top box". Cubans don't come in those boxes no matter what the guy selling them tells you. they usually say its some special edition or something but its all BS. They don't come in glass top boxes period.
Hope that helps save you $49.

Fakes for sure....

Even if the Boxes, stamps, bands, seals are all real...they could still be fake....even if they have a tripple cap, still fake....

The counterfeit market is rediculously huge...and professional...

I have had a few cigars that are all legit except for the tobacco that was being used in them...

I would find a trustworthy source and stick with that....

Without a doubt! There is way too much money at stake, so therefore the counterfeit market spends amazing amounts of money to make them as real as they can. Just as we can be well educated on the things to look for, so can they. Bildo brings up the funniest of the give aways, the glass top. I have a glass top box of Sublimes if any is interested!!! :p Internet price of 250.00....What a deal!! Act now :!: :!: :!:

Paul,

What a find. I head it was a limited edition run and they made less then 1000 of those boxes with glass tops.

Macallan, I Don't mean to correct you, but it was only 100 boxes. I have two of them, with the numbers of 23 and 24. 8)

Ya well you both are wrong!!! I recieved this box from Castro himself for saving his dog from certain drowning trying to defect to Miami!! For this I was given a one of kind box of sublimes...there is no other like it gentlemen!! I cannot stress the impotance of getting in touch with me ASAP!!!!!

after the sale of this box, I may be able to find more of it;s kind, watch my ebay store for more details!!!!

my friend told me he bought a box of cubans in mexico a month ago when he was there. i was shaking my head on the phone. but i had taught him well, he went to an lcdh and bought a box of the pequenos or whatever their cig sized cigar is. i didn't really look at them but just told them they were real. at least hes learning.

thanks for all the education guys....lol, and the laughs as well!! :D
I'll definitely stay clear of this!

I have a friend who left for Cancun yesterday who I had turned onto Cohiba's Sig series, so, he asked before he left if I wanted any that he planned on buying a box or two while in Cancun. I told him the chances of him getting real cubans was possibly as high as winning the lottery and his money would be best spent on swag from the trip. he didn't believe me, so, I figure he'll spend a couple of hundred on a box of sig III's or something that will be nothing more then glorified Dominican or mexican tobacco!! :D You can only lead a horse to water I suppose! I got fooled, but I learned!!!

So I guess the question for me is... How in the world to get real cubans that arent special editions from castro himself?

That my friend is a question that will be answered in time. In time and through posts like this, you will find more information as to good places to go. the only thing I can say is, cuban cigars are good cigars, some are great, others are lack luster, but there are many domestics that are as good or better for a comparable price. I say the last statement to groom the response, I cannot help you find cuban cigars, but I encourage you to research the domestic sticks that you may enjoy just as much, and get in on a boxx pass or trade with someone who may send you a very special stick! :D I know that doesn't answer your question, but I think it's the best I can do.

Anyone else to weigh in?

HAHA!! and the legend continues and continues and ...
thanks for the info

Eclipse makes some very good points. The most important thing for you to do is stick around here and get to know many of our members. In the meantime, like he said, there are many comparable non-cubans within easy reach. The worst mistake that you could make would be to blindly throw down some big bucks on Cubans only to find out they fall short of your expectations.

Then again, you could always hang out in Key West and wait for some to float ashore  :bolt:
