whats so good about cubans, and why are they illegal in the US

They are, according to most people who have smoked REAL Cubans, simply the boldest tasting, best tasting, most complex cigars on the market. They are illegal because of the embargo that was established by the United States when Castro took over, and it has not been lifted to this day, although there are fans of lifting the embargo. The United States may not trade with Cuba, therefore you may not legally own Cuban products, rum, cigars, etc.

While we freely speak about the Cuban cigars we may smoke on these forums, we do so at our own possible peril. We do NOT talk about the procuring of Cuban cigars, not from your third cousin's lesbian lover's fourth ex-husband, nor from web sites or illegal shops in Florida. Besides how they taste, one may talk about the differences in storing them, how they burn when smoked, etc.

Anytime you get tired of those Boli PC's, just feel free to send 'em my way buddy

This is an interesting post. In Canada, I can buy the Cuban cigars quite legally, but our country has its own type of embargo/discouragement in the form of taxes. Any cigar that enters get so heavily taxed that it just about triples the origingal cost. Then you add retail markup (which I never begrudge - they have to make a liveing) +provincial + GST taxes = a great incentive NOT to smoke at all!!

Great system, NO?

what are some non cubans that taste pretty good, but are they that exprensive?

5 Vegas Series A...AWESOME smokes for only $4 - $5 a stick. I just ordered a box today.

Taste with cigars is almost a personal thing. What I like, you may hate and applies the other way around.
Personally, I dont care too much for the taste of cuban tobacco, I find it bitter tasting. Then again, Ive only smoked a few, so I do need to try many more before I can make a generalized statement about my look on Cuban cigars.

From your question though, it seems you have a belief that only Cuban cigars are "good?"

If you are a fan of the PC or corona size, try the Cusano C10 corona. I smoked two today, awesome cigar!!

Exactly my thoughts Capt! Very similar taste. I found the same true for the El Rey Del Mundo PC as well.

Great question, Redspooner. I remember Wolfdaddy mentioning that there are a lot of non-cuban cigars that are just as good or even better. I was wondering what those were.

Red, just start surfing all the threads on the board here, and you will pick up lots of ideas about whtat makes a good cigar. A lot of the talk is about expensive smokes, but there are PLENTY of inexpensive smokes out there that will give you lots of flavor and enjoyment.

CAO Brazilia is one of my favs right now, as is the Indian Tabac Fuerte Maduro. A good idea is to pick a webisite and order singles to try. Enjoy them all and work from there!!

Cigar.com's single stick ordering makes it SOOO easy to sample alot of stix in short order.

5 Vegas As
Cusano 18
Partagas Black Label
Flor de Oliva
Cigar.com's own Labels (Cuban, Cameroon, and Red).

All pretty inexpensive and all goooooooood, in my book anyway. :D :D :D

taste is subjective. go to a cigar shop and pick a cigar, the guy in the store might be able to give you a helping hand. smoke it. if you like it buy another one. if you don't like it make a not of it and don't buy anymore. that's one of the best parts of smoking cigars.

as far as cuban versus non-cuban cigars. that's like comparing pepsi to coke. both colas but different recipes. there are good and bad in both families.

A lot of the Cubans are cheaper than most premium domestics too!! But due to the current restrictions, gtting them can cost some people much much more...

I love the Cien Anos by Aurora, C10's, Hermanos Vintage....there's a long list..CAO criollo's too.....

I'm gonna go with BP on this one. The Cusano line and the Flor de Oliva are two of my favorites. I really like the Flor de Oliva Grand Cameroon line too.
