So, I found myself asking myself "Self, how long will a cigar remain smokable after it has gone or been put out prematurely?"

Do you know what I said back to myself? I said "Self, let's find out."

At our paintball park here in the Old Dominion, we use tubes that are airtight for storage of paintballs. So, when I had to abandon a Partagas Black Label Classico early, I placed it in one of these tubes. (I allowed it to burn out, scraped off the ash, and blew through the stick before placing it in the tube.) Air tight, NO humidification device, just the stick.

I left it there for 2 weeks.

After walking past it and looking at it every time, I finally screwed up the courage to re-light it.

Opened the tube, no bad aroma. Slightly tobacco-ey and slightly smoke-y.

Put it to my lips, no bad taste.

Followed the ritual light-the-foot, blow, suck, blah blah. And guess what...

That was one HECK of a nice cigar.
As a watermark to judge against, I also lit another stick and smoked it at the same time, alternating between the two.

I don't know what this all means, but it was fun to try.

Do you always find yourself talking to yourself?

Other than that, can any airtight tube be used?

I think we all talk to ourselves at least once in a while.... What conserns me is that he answers back...hehe

Good experiment though. I have wondered if there was a way to save a partially smoked stick. I often am short on time(especially while smoking outside in the winter!) Did you just brush off the ash, or did you use a cutter to get to unburnt tobaco?

TO re light or not to re light , that is the question, well I have re lit & hated it, & I have re lit & loved it, same cigar , different times, some good some bad, , I love to light up a BIG 8.5 x 52 maduro Fuente cannone when I get on the yard tractor to cut the grass , it is about a 2.5 hour smoke , & it takes just under 2 hours to cut my yard, so I have a lot of cigar left when I am finished cutting, most of the time I sit on the deck & finishe the smoke , a few times I have just set it down & gone in to shower right after cutting, come back the next day or 2, maybe a week, it just sitting out in the ash tray, no tube, no knocking off the hot ash, just take it out of my mouth & set it down, , I have had 3 or 4 sticks in the ashtray at one time, , & just grab one , fire it up , wow great smoke, just a we bit stronger , but still a nice smoke, , finish it, grab the next one sitting right beside it, could be wonderfull could be a dog rocket , they all could be DR's or they can all be good, I have no idea why & what makes them go bad or stay good, , hey when you want a cigar, & are to dammmmm lazy to go in the house & get one out of the humidor, & there are 5 butts in the ashtray, all 3 inches or longer, well that will save you from getting up , going into the house to get a fresh smoke, , if my Grandsion is there I send him in to get me a fresh one out of the humidor, he knows what humidor has what I want, ( I keep 9 in the house ) but if I just want to get rid of what is sitting there I fire up one in the ashtray. you roll the dice & take your chance .
Enjoy, Vince

Could you send me a couple of sticks that you haven't smoked so that I can perform that experiment? You really need to have this test done up north to see how it works. A couple of those cigars that don't come in cellophane would do.

Just trying to help you out, Dr. BP.

:)

I agree, BP. I think you should have a control group for this little experiment. You send us a few sticks, and we will gladly help you out of the kindness of our heart! :D

But seriously folks, I too have been experimenting with my cheaper cigars in this way for a while now. It is not very often I want to sit outside and finish a whole cigar in the cold, so I too will perform the blow through, scrape, blow through manoever, and then just leave it in the ashtray, where it will generally freeze because of the weather.

When I come back to them sometimes as much as a week later, they have all provided a very worthwhile smoke. I would never do this to a really expensive cigar, but have found it to be very worth while with inexpensive one that I have tried so far.

By the way, with a CAO Black, it actually tasted better the second time around!

I imagine the 40 time around would taste better than the first too when it comes to the CAO Black.

Hey, don't you go dissing my CAO. I have yet to have a bad one from that company. But as they say, all tastes are different!

I have done this also but not as long as a week and they all have smoked fine t0 me.......I have no freezing problem here in south florida

On more expensive sticks I have scraped the ash off with a knive and put the stick back in the celephane and saved for later....if your cutter can handle the ring size it would be nice to cut off the burned ash completely...my x13 wont cut my new 92 vintage patels tried that last night....bummer

You mean you're NOT suppose to answer back when you're talking to yourself? I guess I've got 49.186 years to review. See you guys in ohhhhh, twenty years or so. :dunno: :duh:

I did scrape as much ash off as possible.

Kelvin; for this experiment to actually work I will have to smoke part of the stick FIRST, then seal and send to you. Then you could re-light and try it.

I have some of these sticks with no celophane laying around, so that's no problem. BUT, how much of the stick to smoke before sending it to you? 75%? 85%. Probably around 90% of the stick, that way you won't be confused about which end to light.

I'll get em right out to ya.

I love CAO's. Next to Patel (of course) they're probably my favorite. I was just dissing the CAO Black. I just can't stand them. I don't know why they'd be so different from the other lines but they're just horrible tasting.

Now BP - I figured you for the pure scientist - you must know that we wouldn't get accurate results if you were to smoke them first exposing those poor control cigars to what in God's name was ever in your mouth (we don't need to go there, man  ).

I would think about 6 sticks would be good for the experiment.

I think it's pretty obvious that whatever "qualities" my body imparted to the experimental stick is what made it a good re-smoke.

hello!
