Hello all from a new member,

I guess you could say that I am new to the cigar world. I was introduced to this wonderful world a little over one year ago (New Years eve 04/05 as it may be). Let's just say that it has been a wonderful year for me.

A little background info for the interested. I started with what remains to be my favorite smoke, Davidoff Special R. The high price tag has spoiled me to the limit and I have now recently started to explore less expensive means to the same pleasure. For example, Ancient Warrior, Ashton, Peterson, and another of my favorites, the Padron 3000 Maduro. Finally, I have just purchased, and smoked only minutes ago, the M1 by Cusano. I have been nothing short of impressed with every single cigar to this point.

My question is, am I experiencing a bit of beginner's luck? So far I have not been disappointed. Now, I know that I have been enjoying cigars which are fairly well praised and recommended by my local shop (thank you to Club Humidor in San Antonio and cigar.com!!!). I am just blessed with good advice or is there a "bad cigar" out there?

I guess my next question is, any suggestions for the new guy? Like I said above, the Special R is my favorite, but nothing so far has rubbed me the wrong way. Even the great bargain of the M1 by Cusano was very pleasing to me.

I look forward to reading all of your suggestions, cheers!

Cusano 18 is one of the favorites here, wonderful smoke, with a damn good price tag(4.50 for robusto at the local). Punch Rare Corojo is also a good smoke, and even a better smoke after considering the price tag(4.85 for magnum at the local shop). The Bolivar 05 blend is one of my personal favorites. Ive gone through quite a few of these, and have yet to have a bad one...and at about 6bux a stick for the toro, pretty good price.
Another popular one, one that I dont enjoy though, is the Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story. Just going on what I hear, as I dont like anything from Fuente minus OpusX and Anejo, they are a wonderful smoke.
Give pretty much anything from CAO a try(non flavors of course), they are all great cigars. Personal favs from CAO are the Italia and the Brazillia.
While not cheap, but not too expensive at the same time, the Padron 1926 and 1964 anniversary cigars are spectacular.

I would say all of these are medium-full bodied in flavor.

H4xxOr, how funny. I enjoy everything from the Fuente line, but I don't like ANYTHING from CAO. That gives you a little insight of how different palates are. Different Countries=different tasting tobacco.

I too have been a cigar smoker for about a year.
The two main things that were the most help in deciding what to try have been this forum, and the Cigar.com Cigar of the Month Club.

Welcome to the forum, I guess I just had to throw my 2 cents worth in. I really like the Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Maduro. They are a little stronger smoke, but in the Toro size they aren't that expensive, and it is a great way to spend about 45 minutes to an hour. There you go! Enjoy the obsession, I mean hobby!

Obsession indeed!!! Thanks to everyone for their insight.

I Enjoy a single malt scotch with my cigar as often as my liver will allow me , most of the time it is Coffee, some time it is coffee & scotch, & when it is cold out , a bit of brandy or a glass of Port with the coffee & cigar , some thing going on well light up a big cigar, pour a snifter of scotch, a sipp or 2 of Port, fire up the Freedom Press coffee pot & let the games begin ! Enjoy, Vince

Brenda, I believe "Freedom"press is what some people refer to as a press pot, or um should I say..."French" Press.

Correct. Another example is freedom fries. Brenda, haven't you checked out the tea and coffee forums?!?!?! We need more people!

Capt, I think that between you and Vince, I am just about sold on the idea. I love coffee, although I have a hard time yet with the strong stuff. What can I say, the first 30 some years of my life were pretty sheltered. I did not even start drinking coffee until a few years ago...Now I am hooked on cigars, and Vince has got me going on Scotch...sheesh! Vince said he thought I was on my way to becomming a dirty old man,,lol :p :p

Most people that think coffee is too strong, usually it isn't. Most of the time, people don't add ENOUGH coffee to the pot, thus extracting too much from the little amount of gounds there is, causing it to be bitter. I bet if you got a press recipe (coffee to water) from Bloofington, Vince or the others, I bet you will be more than supprised at the amount of coffee grounds. For me, its 2 heaping tablespoons per 6 oz. water. If you like it "milder", brew to full strength, and dilute after. Also, dont leave the coffee pot on the warmer. This also leads to bitterness. Use a carafe. Sorry for the treadjack, I am going to post this in the coffee forum too.

Thanks, Capt. Will look for it there.

To get this thread back on track, I (so far) am enjoying coffee or Scotch with my cigars. The taste of beer was nice too, but did not like the effects of coldness; and I just can't bring myself to drink Domestic beer at room temp.

By the way, for Brenda and our members who are mutual with our friends over at Cigar Wise, don't go using the term "Freedom Press" over at Cigar Wise. Use the correct term "French Press" or "press."

They have their rules as we do, and on more than one occasion I was reminded by an old friend, who is a moderator, of one of those rules. Because of politically oriented discussions becoming overly volatile and trouble spreading from the Cigars Calling forum to the others, they had to institute a rule that people refrain from using language that could be misinterpreted by someone, and consequently picked on, to start a politically oriented, threadjacking discussion that could get out of hand.

Just trying to be helpful and also considerate of our mutual members and good friends over at Cigar Wise. If there's something I'm aware of that others should be, and I can help, then I'll pass it along. This is one such piece of advice.

So, you have me interested in the coffee thing now. Perhaps one of the gurus here could enlighten an "instant Folgers" guy???

I live In Freedom Pa, 15042 , I have used the term press pot & Freedom Press pot for years before P.C.- B.S., I have never made freedom Frys, but I have made French frys , BUT the correct name for this deep fat fried potato is Brussells style potato, the potatoe chip is a New York ( catskills ) invention, I forget the chefs nema at the moment, & am to lazy to go look it up, but some customer complained that his fried potatoes were to thick & were under cooked, so the chef got out a truffel slicer & cut the potatoes extra thin & served them crisp, the rest is history, , some time about 1890 or 1900 I think, but it was a long time since I was in the class room, learning or teaching, so maybe I dont have the facts right, but the only way to find out if I am right or wrong some one will need to look it up, cause I am way to dammmm lazy to look it up, hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince ( never thought to be PC)

Forgive my spelling, But if I remember correctly, they were called Pom Fritz in Germany, always thought that was an amusing name :p
