I am not 100% sure on this, so you should contact the airline, but I believe that you can have a lighter in checked luggage as long as it has no fuel in it. You would have to get fuel at your destination, because you can't transport the fuel on the plane. This is my understanding of the regulations, but again....ask your airline to be sure.

That's pretty much my understanding. Aside from certain exceptions you can't have any highly flammable compressed gasses or liquids on airplanes. There's an exception for a small amount (like one can/person) of stuff like hairspray. There used to be one for a lighter if you carried it on, but that got dumped a while back. Thank the Shoe Bomber. Despite not taking down the plane, he was a rather sucessful terrorist. No more flying with a lighter *grumble* *grumble*.
This also applies to air freight, but there's no exemption for toiletries and smoking supplies. If you want to ship filled lighters, hair spray, or a can of WD40, you have to ship it ground and declare it as hazardous.
Technically you should be fine with it as a carry on or in baggage if it's empty. I wouldn't check it though. Keep in mind you're dealing with the governement. Chances are they won't notice it, but if they do they probably won't look to see if it's full. They'll just assume it is and proceed to cause you all sorts of nuisances. Personally I wouldn't bother. I'd just take a few matches and get more matches or a disposable once I got there.

Oh, come on, DD. Stop beating around the bush, and tell us what you think!! :p

I just looked it up to be sure as my friend brought his lighter when I flew to Sand Diego in the summer. He must have slipped by because the FAA officially no longer allows compressed fuel containers, i.e. butane/propane lighters/torches.

I would just go to any gas station and buy one when I would get there. You can probably get a cheapy for 5 bucks.

There is one exception; the Zippo exception. But then you have to buy their special FAA approved case, no fuel, blah blah blah.

Much easier to buy there.

Thanks,

SO what your are saying is no huh? Well what about?

Thanks for the clear cut answer DD and Mac. I also aperciate you other guys too, but I knew where I stood with their answer.

Cheers
Martin

Bahha that was funny. I hope I am able to get out, but if it is like the last times I went it will be 15 hour days. Waiting on data to transfer from one server to another and setting it up. If everything goes smooth I might have half a day. to bum. If that is the case I might be able to meet uup with Wolf daddy and we can burn a couple down.

redleg if you are ever over tampa or sarasota way let me know we could sit down and smoke a couple :D
