Visiting in Pheonix
I bought this cigar about 3 weeks ago and it has been at the bottom of my humi since then. I am fairly certain that this is mold. What do I do about the rest of my cigars. This is the first case, and It was still in the plastic wrapper. The reason I had not discovered this sooner is because the mold was under the cedar. What should I do with the rest of my cigars. Could they be infected even though all my cigars are in their plastic wrappers? Is this for sure mold?

thank you everyone so much for your help

Rich

That's not mold, it's bloom. That's a good thing. If it turns blue and fuzzy, that's mold. Don't worry about it. Mold very rarely develops at the bottom of a humidor, because the cigars are the furthest away from the humidification element, if we're talking about a standard wooden desk top model here. Bloom is a positive by product of aging, although a cigar with a lot of bloom should be watched, because it can become moldy it overly humidified after the bloom is first noticed.

Yep, what Bloof said There is a site that shows great pictures of plume/bloom and mold. if I can find it I'll let you know.

As long as it is not blue you are good to go. The white stuff rubs off. Just to be sure I would wipe it off and store it seperately. IMHO I think you have mold there but nothing terminal.

If you are nervous about it, send it to me and I will dispose of it for you.

(Those are good cigars.)

Rich, are those flor fina 8-5-8's? I had the same problem with 5 out of 6 of them I purchased from a local shop in early Feb. http://cigar.ambackforum.com/viewtopic. ... oom#274797 so if you have others you should probably remove the cedar and check them also. I am fairly certain mine was a pre-purchase problem but the shop owner would not do anythihg for me, so now I go elsewhere.

My shop has the same problem with LGC Serie R maduros. Nothing else is ever moldy and he keep things at a 70-72% from what I've seen. It almost seems like certain wrappers are more susceptable to white mold. Any logic to this?

Anyway look for tiny crystal-like formation. That is bloom. Fuzziness is mold.

Ok everyone, thanks so much for the speedy and helpful responses! After carefully evaluating the situation, I have decided to quarantine the only cigar infected ( that I can tell ). I tried to "wipe" the cigar clean before lighting up, but the white "stains" were fighting to stay attached to the cigar? In a couple of posts, it was said that it should wipe off easily. Not the case. Any other suggestions?

Thanks again,
Rich

Leave it alone, the cigar is fine. Well established bloom doesn't wipe off. Just make sure it doesn't get fuzzy and turn blue. No need to quarantine it, either. It would be nice to see that spread to your other cigars. Just remember to keep your humidity levels between 62-66% and your temperature no more than 70 if you can help it.

I tell ya Martha, the boy's gonna pick at that thing until it bleeds. Well, whaddaya want me to do, tie his hands behind his back?
