CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA!!!!
Recently, as Kelvin and DevilDog have experienced, I have followed a natural progression into a coffe fetish. I'm not a huge caffiene person, so i don't tend to drink much, but I have enjoyed a new dimension to some of my fav's mixing them with a cup of joe.

Knowing what I do about the group, and I even believe there are some of you that roast your own beans and what not, what are your opinions of quality coffee to go with quality cigars? And...who wants to get a trade going, maybe a group thing(moderator approved of course) of a sampling of the forums favorite coffee's and sticks so that those interested could all indulge..

Feedback, then I'll move forward with whatever this thing takes as a shape. First and foremost, what do you like, second, interest in a box pass, or multi trade, or maybe even a bracket where we pair up with multi "consumers" and trade goods.

Now talk amongst yourselves.... :D

Just had a cup of the Montecristo that Eclipse Man just sent to me (you are the best!) It was excellent. I am taking a cup to go and having it with a stick this afternoon on the golf course. Very flavorful coffee without being overpowering. I am looking forward to the pairing.

I have also enjoyed the coffees shared in the box pass - especially the Peaburys.

I started this over in the coffee forum several months ago. We have already done two passes, or trades as we referred to them. The first trade, four where involved, so we each sent out 4 boxes, one to each member. Some sent a little extra suprises. I have been meaning to do another, was just gonna give it some time.....

What about good ol' Folgers Classic Roast?

Now there has to be something said for the classica I suppose.... :D

So are we saying that this thread should rest in the coffee forum? I was thinking more of a cigar centric feel to the trade ( IE - I really like the Kona coffee my good friend from camp pendelton DD sent me with a gurkha legend 8years) and I would send you some of the Kona and maybe a few gurkha's for your enjoyment.

Dunno, you guys and gals can help with that decision....

Thats what we did. I think I sent some a Bolivar PC with Kauai Peaberry, and others a Graycliff with Kenya AA. None of my combos were the same. Everyone got something different, but they were all combos that I have tried.

I my case I had sent out what I had on hand and extras of. I didn't have time to do a true combo of matching a cigar with the coffee. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure what cigar would match up well with the tanzanian peaberry I sent out. I would imagine either a cameroon or some type of maduro. :dunno:

Cappy....that sounds right on!!! looks like I'm speaking of something that already exists!

there goes my thunder....LOL

Eclipse, I'm sorry man!! Too bad we can't do a bourbon and scotch pass........ That, I would take credit for!!!

Right on Bobb!! If you get it figured out, let me know!

Hey Eclipse!

We did two passes over in the coffee forum - the first was four people and we each sent the other 3 a 1/4 or 1/3 of a pound of our favorite coffee and a cigar or two. The second had more people (8 or 9 I think) and I set it up so that everyone had 4 people to send to and everyone got 4 packages. That was also a coffee and cigar pass.

I'd be up for doing that again! If anyone else is interested, I'll start up a new thread there .

acually I just got delivery of my freshroast plus eight this evening and I plan on playing Juan valdez (my wife has nick named me this since I started roasting on a poprorm popper  ) in the garage tonight with the 6 new flavor of green beans I got with it

Colombia Supremo - Huila
Costa Rica Tres Rios
Timor Organic - FT

Ok here's the key: Great coffee and good coffee can come from many different kinds of beans. The trick is the amount of time the actual grounds are exposed to the hot water. Typically in a pot of drip brewed coffee, you find a bitter finish taste. This is because the grounds have been soaked. When coffee is exposed to water for longer than twenty seconds, the acids are released. If you can brew coffee with a 15 second exposure, the only things released are caffine, oil (taste), and color. This is why espresso, when done correctly, is so darn good. Another myth is that espresso has more caffine, not true, drip coffee does. AND lighter roast coffee beans have more than dark roast. Yes you get bad, almost caustic, espresso. People tend to blame it on the bean. The fact is that it's the amount of time you expose those grounds. I hate a bitter cigar, I hate bitter coffee. I love a strong cigar, I love a strong cup of joe. I just want both. 8)

So why is my 4 minutes in the press pot not bitter?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. The press coffee comes out better but needs more time to be exposed to the beans.

I agree that OVER-extraction will cause bitterness, but I didn't know anything over 15 seconds was over-extraction....hmmm.

Are we talking the same things here?

A drip coffee maker requires beans to ground, a bean press does not.

Once coffee is ground, it would take a much less period of time to extract the flavors and colors from the coffee then "soaking" if you with the whole bean in it's native form?

Just a theory, I'm sure we will get the answers soon...
