opus x aged

I have 4 opus x from 1998. I had a bunch but I like to smoke my cigars so they are pretty much gone. I had a guy offer me $80 a stick today. These cigars are the Fuente Fuente size!

It isn't about aging stock. but about reading articles and forums that say certain years are the best, and yes they probably are. I bought these opus for $11 a stick. I do realize that the newer opus are "not as good", but I don't see a $69 dollar difference. Articles are bringing a new level to the purchase of cigars. It is bringing people with money to buy up aged stock of cigars. I don't like this trend, I believe it cuts out the fun of buying a box of cigars and seeing how they progress. Yes certain years are the best, and we all want the best cigars. That is why you do your research in the first place, not almost 10 years later.

My point is age some stock, and have fun with the hobby. When I bought those sticks I was not in anyway intending to sell them, but just to smoke one and age the rest to see how they changed. Too many people are reading forums and magazines and buying up aged stock because they heard it is the best year or whatever when they have no clue about cigars in the first place.
When I bought those sticks I had no clue what the future of Opus would be. I didn't buy them as an investment and I sure as heck am not going to sell them as one.

Develop your pallate, smoke what you want, stock up on what you love, age what you think has potential for improvement, and enjoy the experience to the fullest! Read the reviews of your fellow smokers as guidence but take it with a grain of salt because everyone enjoys something different.

Buying aged stock is fine, as long as you will be able to enjoy it. But there are a bunch of people out there buying aged stock because they heard its good, when in reality they wouldn't know the difference between a white owl and a 98 opus.
Don't buy it because you have the money to.... buy it becuase you can respect the experience.

Thanks in advance for the rant

Great comment and great Avatar.

I tend to do a combination. As much as I try to age my own stuff (which I do quite a bit), I also end up buying some aged stock becuase I am just too damn impatient.

Great post Bildo!! I couldn't agree more with both you and Alex. I have in the past, bought aged stock and had a newer offering of the same brand in hopes to appreciate more the aged stock, but you are 10000% right, this purchase was with a line that I love anyway Cusano!! :D

Of course it always fun to see how long you can go without smoking something that you bought with the intent on aging them, and they always taste better when they are your aged stock!

Now smoke on.....

I tried to make sure I got the point across that buying aged stock is not bad, I do it too. Its just the certain people that are doing it, and their reasons for doing it, that bug me.

Thanks for the comments, nice to know two smokers I respect agree with me!

Right on!

The first time I read this thread I was reminded of a guy I know from town, I see him at the shop here and there. Me and him started getting serious about cigars around the same time and it's revealing to me seeing what he buys and his motivations for doing so. My acquaintance seems to have the mindset that the costlier the better, his everyday is a La Aurora Preferido. Me being of a bit more modest budget enjoy a whole lot of different cigars, my best experience so far was a $6 El Rey del Mundo.

I guess that what I am getting at is that I have something that this guy doesn't: I can enjoy a $3-4 cigar as much as I do a $12+ smoke. I appreciate pretty much everything I smoke and enjoy the learning process, my acquiantance has the mindset that if it's not top shelf and pricey then it might as well have came out of a dogs rear end. Somedays I feel a bit sad for him that he may never give himself the opportunity to try and enjoy some of the stuff that I find so enjoyable.

I am half tempted to slip the bands off some T*******s and replace them with Fuente bands and find a way to slip them to him but I really don't care to waste my time doing so.

My own experience is that I am just getting a palate developed, I know a few brands that I can count on, I am getting my feet a little wet with the high end collecting and aging thing and I have enjoyed my experiences to the utmost. I hope the day never comes that I turn my nose up when offered somebody else's idea of a good cigar, stop learning or don't enjoy the experience, if that day comes then I will have lost something.

All this being said....Bildo, I will give you $81 a stick!

you put it well, and the last line was great!

They are going to be smoked at an upcoming event and I will make sure to get a picture to post on this thread :D

I agree!! There is nothing better than experiencing and enjoying this hobby for yourself, not for the image and not by what others tell you is good, but unfortunately we can't avoid that! These kind of people will always be around. But for those who enjoy this hobby because they love cigars and not the image or price tag, they know what sort of appreciation can be found. The others will just move on after they get sick of it.

To all of us however, it is a lifestyle!!

Thats really good advice and as one of those who is developing his taste I appreciate your words and will take them to heart.
