My humi is at 65 degrees and 70 humidity. I have noticed over the past week a few cigars have come unraveled when I smoke them. Just the wrapper seem to come loose not all just a few. Is this the cigar or do I need to adjust something??

How much of the cap are you cutting off?

It does not sound like a humdity issue. If too much of the cap is cut off your cigar can begin to unwravel.

Is there a drastic change in temperature between where you store your cigars and where you're smoking them? I used to have that problem a lot around this time of year when the temp fluctuated between room temp to Coldy McColderson outside.

Were is it coming undone? I am thinking like Phish as long as it is coming undone at the cap. if it is the foot, you might want to drop the Rh to 65%. that is were I keep mine at and have not had a problem.

At 70% I would think that the cigar would be kinda plump and spongy without any risk of unraveling. But if you were to go outside or even inside with forced hot air, that shock could split the wrapper, especially once lit.

Is it actually splitting and then unraveling, or just unraveling in one large leaf?

All the problem cigars where punched with my xikar

It seems to be just the wrapper in places. Not at the cap in the middle or foot for the most part. I do however have forced hot air heat..

In the Winter I usually keep my cigars at a lower RH.
I use 62% - (that is me).
Smoking cigars on the dry side will sometime prevent wrappers from cracking - unraveling - the heat changes - room RH all have to do with a lot of this.

Also I almost never use a punch (as a last resort)
The cap always unwraps and comes off.
Find a GOOD SHARP cutter - Xikar Multi-tool
are cheap & work well.

I think its most likely the RH shock then. Though I will agree with CC in that you should get a good cutter for the same reason as his and that you should lower your RH. Mine is right about 62 as well.

You could sent me your cigars, I'll cut them with my Xikar and then I'll let you know if they unravel

There is no problem at the cap. It is the foot and the middle. I do have a nice Xikar cutter but I like the xikar punch better for rounded caps. I use the cutter for the torpedo types.

I sometimes have a unravel problem with sticks I've handled too much (take them out of the humi, place in travel humi, smoke outdoors, etc.)

Do you think any of these could be contributing?

Travis,
do you leave your bands on or do you take them off before you light up?? I find that I have some unravelling problems if I'm not carefull taking the band off

I take the band off when I am about half done. They seem to peel off easier that way.
