Puffs per Minute ??

I was having a cigar at my favorite shop the other day and one of the guys I was talking to said that you should only puff a cigar once per minute. He said that that helps to get the most flavor out of the cigar. I tried this last night with my smoke, but I don't have the patience for it, and enjoy 2-3 puffs per minute. Is this a wives tale or is there any truth to the puff per minute ??

I would have to say that he is correct. the slower you can smoke a cigar the more flavors will not only develop but be noticeable for you. Slow down and enjoy it.

I've read this several times too, as well as never letting the cap get wet. One article I read went so far as to say the cigar should never spend more than 3 minutes total between the lips, not much time considering my average cigar lasts 60-90 minutes. That being said, I agree that the cigar smokes and tastes much better with about 1 draw per minute. In fact, when I first light it, I set it down in the ashtray for a few minutes, sometimes as much as 5, to let it "cool down". I find that when I do this the cigar has much more flavor and doesn't burn nearly as hot. Plus it gives me time to pour a Guinness and let it foam settle

sometimes i let the cap get wet but not very.

i think the point is to not let it get saturated with saliva or to get chewed on. both of these behaviors will make a cigar not as enjoyable.

one puff per minute. yes. this is what makes it a relaxing hobby. you are forced to slow down to enjoy it more. More puffs per minute heat it up. Hot burning cigars can be bitter, harsh, or have a serious bite to them. relax. unwind. puff slowly.

I only take a puff (about) once every minute. My reason is, I don't want the cigar to get too hot. It can get "tar-ish" and bitter. I try to keep the smoke cool with slow not-so-often drags. The biggist problem I have when I smoke is that the cigar goes out constantly. Which is a huge pain.

The more I thought about this the more I thouht I would completely ignor the recommendations and just enjoy this here cigar.

60-90 minutes? this is a new hobbie for me....how are you keeping a cigar going for 60 or 90 minutes?

I frequently end up smoking in the dark when I am outside in the fall and winter, and I find that letting the cherry get back to regular temperature between puffs not only slows you down, but does benefit the flavors of the cigar.

Whether that is one puff per minute, I cannot tell you, but I do know it helps to maintain flavors till the very end!!

There you go brothers and sisters.

in theory, if you are keeping a good Humi and you have good cigars you shouldnt have much of a problem.

if you are having problems there is a CIgar 101 section that may help you sort things out.

I did have one cigar so far last more than 60 min...today actually...and it was the The Cigar.com Corojo Label Churchill

I smoke a lot of Robustos and larger, like 6-7" by 54-58 ring gauge. These monsters burn nice & slow for a good long time. I had a Gurkha Fuerte torpedo grande that I smoked for over 2hrs the other night and put it out with 2" left.

Mmm.. the Corojo Label. Great cigar for just over 2 bucks. The Cameroon is also great (probably my current fave of the House Labels), and the Cuban Label has really grown on me as well.

The Gurkha E. India (7x50) I smoked on for about 2.5 hours and still had at least 20 or 30 min left when I had to go to bed. Very enjoyable and relaxing.

You guys are good! I do not have the self control to puff once every minute. When I golf and smoke cigars the end always gets wet because it spends a lot of time in my mouth while I am putting. I still enjoy my cigars way too much according to my wife. When there are pesky mosquitoes around my wife encourages me to puff more to make more smoke.

I always leave my cigar on the cart when I am putting. The taste of the cigar after letting it sit for a few minutes is fantastic to me. Plus since I usually one-putt it doesn't have time to go out! :p

But seriously, I have slowed on the amount of puffs considerably since I started smoking cigars. The average robusto takes an hour or longer and a churchill takes a minimum of 2 hours. I enjoy cigars so much more since I started taking my time.

Just my 2 cents.

After reading this post I made an effort to take a puff a minte the other night. My robusto sized cigar lasted just over an hour comparied to the usual 45min. I did notice more subtle flavors and it was less harsh. Hopefully I can continue this without paying such close attention.

I've definitly tried to make an effort to smoke slower...not as harsh, flavorfull...but do you find you have trouble keeping it lit?
