Guatemalan grown tobacco?

Just a thought: I have never heard of tobacco grown in Guatemala.

Since Guatemala borders Honduras to the west and should have the same climate/soil, has a company ever tried to grow filler/binder/wrapper tobacco there?

I was able to go to Guatemala for a week a few years back and noticed that a major portion of the economy stems from agriculture. There are several volcanos in the region that I stayed and wondered if the soil would be good for tobacco. Maybe too rich? In the different fields I observed, the crops seemed to flourish quite well.

No big deal, just curious. If anyone has any insight, I'd like to know.

Dustinl -

That is an interesting question.
In Guatemala the Indians use tobacco for Ceremonial purposes.
It is a very strong tobacco.

Purely speculation here, but I know volcanic soil is very fertile, so that's good. However, thinking of nicaraguan tobacco, the soil is very dark and claylike. My *guess* would be that the soil lacks the consistency needed for good tobacco which is why they haven't capitalized on the crop yet. Then again, I could be way off the mark. I'm not really worried though, plenty of great cigars are coming out of the "little 3" countries in Central America to keep me satisfied :D

It is an interesting question though. I'd like to hear more on this topic if anybody has some insight to it.

Welcome to the board Pedro, it's a great place for all cigar lovers as well as those that indulge in pipesmoking and drinking spirits as well. I've learned more here in 6 months than I could've learned on my own in 6 years.

Wow, already got a response. If anyone's intersted on their premium cigar prices, send me a PM. The prices are very inexpensive.
