Macanudo Bashing?

Why do so many of us bash the brand? I have never had one that was great, but never anything that was so terrible to write them off. I had someone ask me about it and when I thought it over..I couldn't really name anything definitively terrible about them. Other than the fact that they are like smoking a big cigarette. So...opinions?

I have never really bashed them. Just don't care for them because I found them way to light for me. I like to taste something.

got to agree here. I have smoked them and found they tasted like nothing so why smoke them.

I am not a huge fan of them. I think the bashing comes from their huge rise in popularity during the cigar boom.

That said - I have tried not to bash any cigar now. I have been dissuaded from trying different cigars because of threads (on many sites) that just pile on with the negativity. My mistake for just not trying something on my own. You never know what you end up liking or disliking. The Cusano 18's used to be my "go to cigar" - now I have lost my taste for it. I never thought that would happen. Folks pile on Jose Piedras - I like them alot - especially on the golf course.

I think Bloof said it the best - the best cigar is the one that YOU like.

I've just recently tried a couple Macanudo maduro Rothchilds and really liked them. They were my first real entry into maduro wrappers. Maybe that's why I like 'em - - my still-uneducated taste hasn't yet savored all the levels of flavor out there. Up 'til now I've sorta preferred the mild ones but at least now I know maduro "been veddy, veddy good to me".

I sure plan to smoke some more of the Mac maduros.

me neither. but in the same breath i cant find anything definitevly great about them either. to me they are the bud light of cigars. they dont taste great or like much but they arent bad at all. .. that and EVERYONE knows them. they are what they are, and in my mind they are uncreative because they try to appeal to the masses, not strike out and do something darring that some may like and some may hate.

there is nothing bad about them. That is why they sell more than any other primium cigar in the US.

When I first started getting into this hobby I would consider Macanudo my "go-to" cigar because it was a very smooth, light easy cigar to smoke that rarely had an aftertaste or much flavor at all. With that said, that is exactly why I hardly ever smoke a macanudo now. My tastes have changed over the years and now I desire a very full-bodied heavier smoke, ala Camacho, Joya's, RP edge etc. You cannot get near that flavor or body out of a macanudo (even their maduro). I guess it all comes down to a personal preference. If you enjoy the cigar, who cares what others think or who is bashing it. I have found that the hobby is about your enjoyment and being able to take an hour out of life to sit back with a good smoke and reflect on the day, think about things to come or just zone out and focus on the cigar at hand.

Right on, Jeremy. And your point is well taken regarding the maturation of one's tastes. I have no doubt mine will advance along those same lines as time goes on. In the meantime, a heavy, full-bodied smoke is a bit more than I can deal with.

I'm probably on the cusp of entering the realm of medium-bodied smokes.
