Central Canada, eh?
I have become a firm believer in soft flame lighters. I mean, I like my torch for touching up, but for a slow warm up, and gentle light, there is nothing that beats a Zippo.

Torches just don't seem to last, something always seems to go wrong with them no matter how much you spend. With a Zippo, you strike your flint, and voila! instant flame.

Let the discussion begin.

I've only ever used torch. My first good lighter was a Lotus. I believe the model is 23. I still use and love that lighter. I also own three Xikars; and Element, an Enigma, and a Trezo. The Trezo is triple flame and wow does it get your cigar lit fast. I wouldn't be opposed to using soft flame but when I started smoking cigars, all I ever heard was to only use Butane. I went through a period where I wanted a Zippo Blu, but never got around to buying on.

One of the appealing things for me when I started cigar was all of the neat accessories. A slippery slope indeed.

Lots of taboo with Zippo lighters and cigars I think. The fluid that they use now is suppose to be odorless but I'm not sure about that as I haven't tried it yet. Anyone know for sure? I do have the Z-Plus insert in one of my Zippos and a regular insert for the other I have. For soft flame, I like the Xikar EXII.

Many people dislike Zippo lighter fluid for the smell and the imparted taste.

Butane is usually the way to go for cigars, in both torches and soft flames.

One excellent soft flame lighter is the Corona Old Boy. Expensive, but durable and will last forever. These are mostly made for pipes, but they can just as easily be used for cigars.

I will say that there is no taste picked up from the newer Zippo Fuels. Anything that would do that is burned off, just like when you let the sulfur in a match burn off. After lighting cigars all summer with the Zippo, I have not noticed any taste change, even when using BBQ starter fluid as a fuel.

Many years ago I liked Imco lighters for my pipes, but they never seemed to last more than a year. When they all broke down I went to cheap chinese butane lighters but lately I've picked up several torch lighters. The ones that seem to perform the best are the cheaper single flame type and I'm leaning toward a brand now that I've found in the $2 to $4 range. Like the old Imco's I liked they also have a visible port to show how much fuel you have.

One of the other forums (MultiTool.org) I belong to had a thread talking about Imcos. I don't know anything about them but from what I've read there, they are good lighters.
