Changing taste in cigars

Wow - this is a great post! It gets my head spinning on how much my taste buds have changed and what cigars I reach for now.

I was a HUGE Maduro fan years ago - I would say that at least 75% of the cigars I smoked at the time used to be maduros. Then slowly I started smoking them less and less and I don't remember the last time that I smoked one - it has to be at least 5 years or so.

Have to admit that now I primarily just smoke Cuban cigars, it's a profile that I absolutely love and now that I have cut back drastically I only smoke what I know I will love. My go to Cuban cigars used to be El Rey del Mundo (mostly the Choix Supreme) and a RASS. While I still smoke the RASS from time to time, my favorite brands are Montecristo (love them Edmundos) and Upmann (No. 2). I love Cohibas but I have a tough time pulling the trigger on a box since they are so much more expensive.

As far as Dominicans - I love the RyJ's. I never liked them early on - but now I like them a lot.

Will be cool to see where I am 5 years from now.

I do recall the first time I noticed a major flavor difference in wrappers. Like Kevin, I smoked a lot of maduros. I recall smoking my first cameroon and thinking, "wow, what a difference". I love cameroons now and tend to lean toward Fuentes when I smoke them. I also recall smoking my first corojo and was turned off by the flavor. I have come to like corojo wrappers and regard Illusiones as one of my favorite brands. As far as habanos, I agree with Kevin, the flavor profile is very different than any other country of origin. And yes, I believe that are better. I hear so many people who say that habanos are not all that people make them out to be. Usually manufacterers of other cigars. Your mileage may vary, but over the past several years I have smoked a lot of habanos and have the opinion that yes, they are really that good.

Yeah Tony, that happened to me a bit a couple of years ago. I was pounding down the cigars - especially on the golf course - and I used to like the more full-bodied cigars the most. There was a point that I was just going through the motions.

Now that I have cut back bigtime (damn stent!!!) I really love my cigars so much more. I think you will see that too. It's like I was blowing out my taste buds.
