Alfredo,

Just wanted to tell you that last week, while sitting at the open air bar in the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, sipping on my Johnny W. Black and talking to good friends...

{...fierce Atlantic waves breaking on the rip-rap, a huge orange Sun starting to touch the horinzon to my left and a subtle salt spray fogging my eyeglasses}

I smoked an Arturo Fuentes Opus X's.

Can't beat that!

Bought two ($15 ea.) but only lit one, the other is at home.

I need a humidor!

The Fuente Fuente Opus X, now that is a cigar! When I was living in NY the local cigar shop was charging $28 for a robusto!

IMHO, the Opus X is right up there with many of the Cubans. You definitely need a humidor!

You WALKED OUT OF A STORE WITH TWO OPUS X'S FOR THE PRICE OF $30?!?!?!?!!!????

WALKED OUT OF THE STORE??? :? :?

Or was it $30 plus an obscene amount of tax? If it was thirty for two Opus X's, even fairly small ones, you got a bargain. Good for you. The scene sounds great. When I was a baby I went in the summer of '57 when I was a few months old, so my father could show me off to the family, and also perhaps again in '58 or '59. Then again in '70 and '72 to see my father for vacation, for Labor Day Weekend in '86 when his mother died, for a weekend and a big family wedding in January '96, and for a working vacation on the farm in August of '98. At any rate, I've heard plenty about the hotel, including that I went there when I was a baby.

Back in my more casual hanging and drinking days, Johnnie Black was one of my favorites. Double Black, straight up!!! Even devout single malt drinkers show respect for it and that tells you something.

Talk to you soon.

I usually get Opus for $12-$15 for Churchill size. The store limits the sale to two sticks per customer, per day. I do have a couple left from a box I bought in their the debut season, 10 years ago. Those pups are mighty tasty about now.

That's a great price range. I have to go down towards Raleigh or Durham and see what they are selling for down there. If they are like the NY prices I was seeing, I may have to give you a call

I've got 3 of these that were traded to me; 2 churchills and a robusto.

I've yet to try one because of their pricey-ness!

Do they age well? If so, these should be getting pretty good!

Yes, they age vey well. I've had some sitting everywhere from 10 days to 10 years, excellent.

It also depends what you like. If you're like some of those die hard Cuban cigar smokers, I wouldn't let them age more than six to twelve months. Those guys like flavor AND a mouthful of fire. :D

I get the Opus in a shop in Kendall, which is just south of Miami. The prices range from $12 to $18, depending upon the size.

I pick up a couple every December and send them to my step father in Washington state. He's spent as much as $100 for an Opus before. I guess you just can't get them out there.

My mother says that he's like a kid in a candy store when the box I send arrives. :D

I like to keep a few for me, of course. I put a couple aside for long-term storage and smoke the rest over the year. I like to save them for special times, like when my wife is at work and the kids are sleeping.

I don't get that alone time very often.

Wow!!! Baboyako is in the house, too!!! Hey folks, if this keeps up, we're going to have one of the most knowledgeable panel of cigar smokers right HERE, . . .

in Your American Backyard, . . .

Welcome, baboyako, thanks for stopping by and sharing yourself. Folks, for those of you who might not know, the prices he's quoting for Opus X are about the best you're going to find anywhere, and it's nice to know they can still be had at that price.

There's a shop in Springfield, MO that sells Opus X, when they have them in, for the reasonable prices. They limit your purchase to 2 a day. I think the Perfecxion No. 4 cost me like $9-11. They are a really cool store called Just for Him. When I'm up that way, I love stopping in to see what they have in stock. I'm still watching for a Padron Anniversay series there. They usually have one box... but of course, I just want to try a single. I drove all the way up there, once (about an hour drive), after calling and saying they had singles. Well, they didn't. I was tiffed... but that's the day I decided to pick up the Opus. I hadn't ever tried one. Still haven't.... it's resting comfortably in my humi.

I think it's time for that Opus X, Frank. Oh, okay, opening day of the NFL season, but don't wait too long.

Availability in New Mehico is pretty seasonal - Xmus and such for OpusX and stuff :p

We can get them around $13 - $18 a stick, depending on size. I'm just not a real big OpusX fan - had too many canoe on me (burn down one side). Should NOT happen in this price range. I do have seven or eight workin' in the humi as we speak though. Maybe they will be all they can be. An Opus of ONE!

If you want to try something different - order the Padron Aniversary pack from Holt's when they are in stock. It is the only way I have found to get a Padron Aniversary "A" plus you get 4 other fine PAM cigars. I think this pack goes for around $75 - $80 and like above they only have them at certain times of the year. IMHO it is much better than the Opus "A". If you can find the Padron 1964 ANIVERSARY Series sell your dogs & children and make a strong move to the hoop. Nice Smokes..... !! Just my 2 cents....

Indeed Cigar Man, the Padron Anniversario Maduro is one of the most highly respected cigars in the world, Cuban or Non-Cuban. That's a great price for that pack, won't find it cheaper anywhere.

Opening Day may be the best time to fire up the Opus. I'm really anxious about trying such a well-hyped cigar.

I thought I would bring back this thread. I just purchased my first Opus X robusto ($14.) I'm planning on hanging on to this for a while before I smoke it. What are your thoughts on this cigar? Worth all the hype, cost?

Great choice Brenda, and good idea on waiting to smoke it. While Opus are great fresh (especially if you want pure tobacco muscle), they get much much better with time.
Be sure that when you do smoke it, it remains the focus of your attention. I've put an Opus down for less than a minute and had to relight it. When I first began smoking them I also had a tendency to smoke it too fast, but I think that had something to do with the excitement of smoking such a fine cigar.

That's higher than MSRP for the robusto, but not outrageous, by any means. As for holding on to it, depends on what you like. If you can take fire and spice, if you like full bodied, strong cigars, smoke it now. If you want it to be more medium, wait three to six months. It'll still taste great. Aging an Opus X beyond six months can be iffy. Some taste great after that, even a couple years later. Some just fall flat on their face. Don't know why that is. I've had smooth, mild cigars taste great even after two or three years.

I think some Opus X's might be like those papayas that you buy, they seem about one day away from ripe, and then, . . .

BAM!!! You check them a day later, and they're tasteless and turning rotten.

You answered my next question. When it comes to aging cigars, do they peak? Apparently, some do.
