How fine do you grind your coffe beans ? I've always ground them as fine as possible for my drip maker.I use an electric blade type.Any opinions ?

One should grind their beans according to the type of equipment they have, and the accompanying instructions. Grinding fine thinking that it will mean stronger or better coffee is not the solution. Not grinding according to your equipment's specifications can actually lead to ruined coffee and also ruined equipment. For the Freedom Press, my preferred method of brewing, I use a coarse grind as recommended.

Ken, Bloof is correct in that it depends on the coffee maker to some extent. His Freedom Press has only a filter screen so the coarse even grind from his Zassenhaus grinder is perfect. Most on the drip makers use a filter so you can grind more to the fine end of things. The reason we all go to the burr grinders rather than the blade is that the burr produces an even grind with most of the particles the same size as opposed to a blade where the result ranges from powder to bigger pieces of bean. When the 200 degree water hits the bean having even surfaces is better for extraction. I use a Solis and it is so quick and fairly quite, and, will do the same grind day after day. Regards

KAZ leaves me reeling like the Aflac duck. That covers it all, right down to my grinder. :eek:mg: The Professor has entered, so sit back and learn, folks. :D

Thanks Bloof, after I learned all I really needed to know in kindergarden I became interested in the "best cup of coffee ever" thanks to you and CastleCrest. It is for sure a slippery slope to learn that after you roast the best beans you need a certain type of grinder, coffee maker, etc. Regards

Can you let us know the model, and/or a link to somewhere that sells them? I have a blade type grinder right now, but I want to get a burr type eventually.

Redspooner, grinding finer, as stated in my second post, is the solution to nothing. If you are making espresso or Turkish, then a fine grind is called for. You need to grind according to the specifications of the equipment you are using. Grinding fine with a Freedom Press, for example, will just ruin the coffee, and certainly not make it taste better.

We have another thread running at the present time, where someone asked about grinders. I'll reply here the same as in the other post. Although I boydcott Germany these days, a friend got me a Zassenhaus hand grinder 14 years ago, which still works fine, and has been used to grind about 550 pounds of coffee. For various types of grinders, or any coffee equipment, I'd recommend checking out the web sites for places like . . .

Peet's
Oren's
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters . . .

or before you click anywhere else, check out the AmBack store, right here. You may find what you're looking for.

The quicker the brew the finer the grind. Examples:

Espresso = ultra fine
Autodrip = a semi-fine/coarse grind (feel like sandpaper)
French Press = semi-coarse grind
Percolator = coarse grind (larger pieces)

I hope this helps.

I stopped using a perclater years ago, it is the worst way IMHO to make coffee, over extraction is the problem with perc coffee, The FREEDOM PRESS POT is the best way IMHO, drip is next, the espresso pot is fine But it will not make enough to fill my mug at one time , I have a Huge mug, 20 ounces , my espresso maker is only good for about 10 ounces at a time . ( I need a Bigger one or a smaller coffee mug ) yea like I am going to give up my mug hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

I still use the Percolator when brewing two different coffees at the same time (when I have a bunch of people over- who want decaf and reg.) The good thing about it is it makes really hot coffee. I don't use the French Press for company (too many steps I'm not willing to do for anyone else.)

I am always willing to do IT hahaha Enjoy, Vince

It's that old Navy cook in you, it just won't go away. You're always looking to do something culinary for the crew. And if there isn't a crew handy, you'll invite one over.

you got it !!! Enjoy, Vince :007:  :wine:
