I bought a 2.5 LB. bag of coffee beans about 6 or 8 weeks ago at a local Sams Club on a whim ,brought it home and used a food processor that the new wife and I received as a wedding gift to grind it up ! Both the wife and I agree this is some of the best coffee that we have ever had . Some of you might want to give it a try and at $10.53 for a 2.5 LB . bag it is a good buy :wink: !
Unlike the stong crap that I brought back from Belize :( .

Just thought that I would pass this along , oh we have only tried the regular brew not the flavored stuff . We just went last night to get some more !
Until then .....Enjoy your Joe !

Is that WITH the shipping? Four dollars and twenty one cents a pound for PREMIUM coffee???

:eek:mg: :eek:mg: :eek:mg: :eek:mg: :eek:mg: :eek:mg: :eek:mg:

No ,not with shipping . We picked up from one of the retail stores .
Considering $tarbuck$ get nearly $10 /LB and in my opinion is not as good .

Mmm...looks like Sam's will be getting even more of my money. Thanks for the info. I've seen the bags there, but was wary of that brand until I knew of someone who liked it.

Now, hold on, let's not all get on the Starbucks bashing bandwagon. Although I don't like and no longer patronize Starbucks for reasons which time does not permit, THEY DO NOT CHARGE APPRECIABLY MORE FOR THEIR COFFEE THAN OTHER REPUTABLE ESTABLISHMENTS LIKE OREN'S, GREEN MOUNTAIN, ETC.

A 20 oz. black coffee from Oren's costs $2.10, while at Starbucks it is pennies more. A 20 oz. cappuccino at Oren's costs $4.10 while at Starbucks it is pennies more. One pound of Colombian Supremo at Oren's, one of the cheapest coffees around, costs $9.99 per pound. This "deal" at Sam's Club may be some kind of special offer, because fresh roasted whole bean coffee costing LESS than $10 per pound and UP, simply isn't logical. Starbucks deserves the bashing, but let's get our facts straight here. It's NOT because they charge SO MUCH MORE than other reputable PREMIUM coffee establishments.

Okay, before I go shave and get ready to leave for a day or so, I found a short way to say it. I know, I know, Bloof found a SHORT WAY to say something must mean that China launches nukes at us this weekend. Believe me, I can't understand it myself, but here goes:

Reasons for not patronizing Starbucks, besides saving pennies here and there, which you can do, and as we know, pennies admittedly add up to dollars in the long run:

(i) poorly trained, inattentive, and occasionally downright discourteous staff;
(ii) coffee brewed and served at much too high a temperature;
(iii) coffee roasted too dark;
(iv) whole bean coffee in bags standing around on wooden "carousels" for God knows how long, thereby getting stale, rather than keeping it properly stored until point of sale.

Personally, I like Starbucks. I was actually trained by them years ago when I worked at Barnes and Noble Cafe. No, they're not the same, and your Starbucks card won't work here. Sorry. Lots of customers apparently couldn't read. What they were actually doing in a B&N baffles me.

Anyway, we were taught proper brewing techniques, how to serve customers (already knew that one), and that freezing coffee is a bad idea. While I don't think it was perfect, I think the biggest problem with Starbucks is personnel. Namely, they don't screen for lazy workers at the begining or unskilled/untrained workers later on.

All that means this: I frequent some Starbucks, not others. If the staff is bad and/or dumb, I don't go back. While I like some of Starbucks' stores and love their coffee, I try to remember that not all are good.

That's a good fair and balanced point of view on Starbucks. That's the way it USED to be in NYC when they first hit the big town about 10-11 years ago. Unfortunately, they went to the dogs, and now just about every Starbucks in NYC is in the bottom of the barrel as far as the negatives you mentioned. I guess that's what happens when you open one on just about every block in Manhattan, including several in the outlying boroughs. Starbucks just got too big for its britches and doesn't want to scale down in the big town.

Starbucks as it started out here 10 years ago, was a different story. They DID make the coffee right, and did store it properly. They also had well trained staff, but eventually gave way to self-centered, all too young, poorly trained wiseasses. There are several Barnes and Noble/Starbucks in NYC. THAT one seems like a natural to me, and they are popular.

I actually like starbucks ,I was merely commenting on the price .The price I quoted for whole bean coffee at SAMS club is cheaper than what I feel is something comparable . $10.53/2.5 LBS. is less expensive than $10/LB. at starbucks . I feel that the stuff at SAMS is good and comparable to a starbucks brew .
Not trying to flame ,I just wanted to let others know about this deal.

Understood. I could afford Starbucks in school mostly because I worked there and got it at a discount! I greatly appreciate the info on the Sam's stuff, and will let y'all know once I try it.

Baker1972, that wasn't a smack down, and I apologize if it seemed that way. I've been away from an online computer for almost a day and a half and couldn't respond sooner. I just wanted to vociferously put to death the myth once and for all that Starbucks is so vastly overpriced compared to other coffee chains. The price you paid for the coffee you purchased is so ridiculously low as to inspire suspicion. Perhaps it was because of the size of the bag. Bulk usually costs less. At any rate, if you like it, that's all that matters.

Having said that, again, I apologize if it seemed heavyhanded, but I actually had my tongue a bit in cheek. I do not like Starbucks, but I feel there are other reasons for bashing them besides price. I would agree however, that they are on the high end of market range, so they are indeed more expensive than anyone else, just not vastly so.

I had very little time when I posted yesterday before leaving the house. Just to clarify.

Commence firing. :mrgreen:

:giveup: :sm_angel: :giveup:

I agree :lol: .
I too, am familiar with some reasons on Starbucks . I do still like some of their products even though I do not agree with some of the views that their home office has some things ,like the wars going on. :roll: . They do not support the wars and whne some of our troops ask for a donation of some beans they refused and said that they do not support the war .
Thanks for clearing that up Bloofington, kinda seemed heavy handed . :wink: .
I think I will try some home roasting eventually someday ,and I really like my coffee and this forum ! Keep up the good work my friend !
Mike

I was appalled when I heard their reasons for not wanting to send a donation to the troops. We support the troops, but not our government's policies, therefore if we sent coffee to the troops, it would be appear to be an admission that we support our government's policies, and so we are not sending any coffee to the troops. Oh, but we still support them. :dunno: :duh: :duh: With what, a spiritual jockstrap??? :duh: :duh:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, I get it. If you send coffee to the troops, you're actually supporting Dubya. Right, when Sergeant Smith of the 3rd Armored is drinking up that Starbucks over-roasted swill, the caffeine actually gets transferred straight to Cheney's heart, thereby causing it to continue beating, and we can't have any of that. I see.

Well, I haven't been there in a long time, and if I had any inkling of ever returning to their overheated, over-roasted, served by untrained 19 year olds at the register, who aren't even looking at you, and barely listening to your order, while telling the person over at the coffee counter about what a great ballet recital they had last night coffee, I just lost it.

I see that you too are familiar with the post as well :wink: .
I remember the meat of it , but could not have posted with such intricate details as you . My memory is fading fast........
Mike

Actually, I am familiar with the news story, never saw a post about it, but my time is limited, so I miss a lot around here. Real nice people, that hierarchy at Starbucks, huh? Not a trace of hypocrisy there.

Brief Update

Baker, I tried the Kuai last week from Sam's. Not so good. My bag was very dry (and it was one of the best in the display). Even in a French press, it had little taste. Strange, but it also had very little smell. I don't even want to discuss the drip machine results. My guess is that they roasted this batch too long, but I'm not too familiar with that part of the process. Thanks for the heads up, but I'll be frequenting a place that just opened up near me that roasts their own beans. Thanks anyway, and if you're ever in San Antonio, head over to Wildfire Coffee off of Huebner Road. Incredible coffee, for a bit less than Starbucks, and they're from Texas.

Sorry to hear that yours was not so great ! :x
Mine was very good and we are still drinking up what we bought before we buy any more .Thanks for the tip on the place in San Antonio. The wife and I go there every now and then to get away from the hustle and bustle of Houston . You ever attend the gunshow over there in SA ?
Mike

Not a problem. I think it may have been out of season, or a lot they had in the back for too long.

Occasionally I go to the big monthly Airport Saxet show, and recently have been going more to the smaller Saxet show out on the outer loop. The smaller one has fewer weirdos, and a little better selection (fewer knives and art booths), IMHO. When did gun shows start carrying arty stuff and knitting supplies?

You spend any time at Collector's Firearms there in Houston? I always try to drop by there when I'm in town, as they have the biggest selection of firearms stuff I've yet seen. Plus those excellent antique and book sections

We got a bag at our local Sam's Club and my wife loves it. I am not a coffee drinker, but she says it is one of the better she has tried. Her favorite coffee is Tim Horton's Coffee that they sell at Tim Horton's Coffee/Donut shops in Canada/NE USA

I was wondering about the one at the airport convention center ?
I was thinking about driving over there tomorrow and checking it out. Is it fairly easy to get to for someone that does not know the area very well ?
Thanks ....Mike
