I am looking to get an electric burr grinder, but do not want to spend a fortune on one.... Does anyone have any experience with Capresso or Krups burr grinders? They both go for about $60. I am open to suggestions for other brands that you have had good luck with. Thanks

I have three grinders, one burr (Cuisinart), a blade I use for spices now, and the new coffee pot I have (Cuisinart) has a blade grinder that automatically grinds and then drops into the basket. It grinds PERFECT grounds.

Spider, I bought a Krups burr grinder, and it works very well. I have absolutely no reservations about recommending it.

I do like the timer and auto shut-off feature. It's great to wake up to. The only problems I have with that coffee maker is that it's kind of a pain to clean (yes, I'm that lazy) and you can't control the grind.

is this the one you are talking about?

this might be a good way for me to go at first. I am always cutting it close in the morning, so an auto brew is a must for me during the week. I can always try the freedom press, and get a bur grinder for the weekends, later. But at least with this I could step up to fresh ground coffee, and even get a roaster to try my hand at that.

Yes that is it. Although you can't control the grind, you don't need to because the grind is set perfect for the pot. Also, the grounds are very uniform due to the screen. Once the grind is the right size, it is shot out the screen into thte basket. If the grounds are too big, it continues to be ground until it is the right size to be diposited. I also agree that it can be a pain to clean. BUT, the coffee is some of the best I have had, and it stays hot for at least 10 hours.

SWEET! I think I will try to pick this little number up tomorrow. Maybe an electric kettle I have been looking at as well. I love to drink tea in the evening, and it will be handy for the freedom pot, when I get one. Thanks, Capt :D

If you look closer the bed bath and beyond page has a link to a $50 burr grinder. I don't know about the quality but the price is right for a burr grinder.

I saw that grinder just the other day - looked ok. But, it is electric, which means you can't bring it with you if you go camping or anything like that - if that matters to you. I'd personally prefer a manual one, that way if the power goes out, I can still have my coffee! Heh...

Well, Capt. I got the cuisinart all set up, going to try my first pot from this jem in the AM. can't wait to wake up to smell of fresh ground columbian supremo :ek:

Colombian Supremo, just finished a pound. One of the least expensive, yet most satisfying and delicious coffees I have tasted. Of the forty or so pounds of coffee a year that go through my system, a number of them are Colombian Supremo.

I have been enjoying it very much. I do not have any good coffee retailers near by...having to get by with Milstone Coffee from Walley World for now. I look forward to trying some new coffees, but will have to make an order to one of the online sellers to get better beans.

I was thinking about another pass here soon, maybe the middle of February? Spider and Scott, make sure you get in on this one. I think the next pass I will do Kauai Peaberry.

Sounds good to me! going to have to get my order into Green Mountain soon then.

Burr vs blade

Not at all an expert so I ask. Are burr grinders for expresso grind or are they for regular grind also? I would like to get a good electric grinder at a reasonable price. I have a little cheapie that works but I think I should get another better one. The one I have seems to cake up on the sides of the container the coffee is ground into. Is this normal? Also I don't want any timer thing, just a simple on-off switch. Thanks for any advice.

A burr grinder is for all types of grinds. You should be able to grind it coarse or fine depanding on the setting you put it on. As far as the timer; I am not sure if there are ones out there without one. I like the one htat I have. It measures out the eact amount of cooffee that I want to grind. Its the cuisinart dbm-8 and for 50 bucks its a good machine; but it does produce some fine particulate dust that clings to the top of the grind container; but it is very easy to clean. Just a wipe with a paper cloth and it is gone. No blade to get in your way.

fish, that's the same burr grinder I recently got. Glad to know I didn't "save" $50 to spend more on a good grinder in a year or two.

I'm not sure how it will work in the long run as I have only owned mine since Christmas, but this one suits my needs just fine. I really like it, but my dog hates the noise it makes. It is not quiet.
