today, so before boarding the 9:53 Hudson Line departure this morning I stopped at the Oren's concession at The Marketplace in Grand Central. I picked up a pound of Guatemala Coban whole bean coffee, which I can only describe as like drinking thick chocolate silk. Great stuff, mellow flavor. Since my "bean card" was full, I was eligible for a free half pound again, and I chose a half pound of La Minita from Costa Rica, in my opinion truly the all around finest coffee in the world, and No. 3 on my list of favorites.

HEY BLOOF, FREE COFFEE, ARE YOU NUTS, NOTHING'S FREE IN THIS WORLD, ESPECIALLY NEW YORK CITY!!! ARE YOU HAVING ANOTHER "BLONDE MOMENT"?!?!?!?!?!!??? . . .

roared the 60,783 fans in Mocha Java Stadium.

Well, you see, Oren's is known as perhaps the best coffee establishment in New York City, and they have these two wonderful things, a "drink card" and a "bean card." If you ask for a bean card the first time you go in to buy coffee, whether whole bean or ground they will stamp the card a number of times depending on whether you bought a quarter, half, one pound or more of coffee. When you have filled up your card i.e., bought six pounds of coffee, you are eligible for a free half pound of coffee, although if you choose Hawaiian Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain, they'll give you a quarter pound, because those are expensive "specialties."

If you go in for a cup of coffee or any beverage, and ask for a "drink card", after it's been stamped 12 times, the 13th time you get a free drink, of any kind. If you're in NYC, you must check out Oren's.
