Latest CA Issue

I was thumbing through the ratings last night, and it looks like at least 1 or 2 Cuban cigars topped each category. Is CA finally giving Habanos the attention they deserve, or are these ratings off the mark? The ratings are on cigars that are still relatively young. Are they being a bit premature on these rankings?
Discuss.

Re: Latest CA Issue

I noticed the same thing, Chris. I found it odd that they ranked the PLPC as high as they did. With age it's a phenomenal smoke - but young it isn't what I would consider a highly ranked cigar. I enjoyed seeing the RASS getting some love.

LOL - you know me well, Dave. I can't help myself. Tomorrow I plan to smoke a Punch Royal Coronation from a box I just got in.

Re: Latest CA Issue

I have noticed the same thing with CA. I think they are way off on some of their ratings and I feel the mag. is a little dated.
Have you seen the Cigar Press Mag?
I got my hands on one the other day. The owner of the B&M gave me one and said "Its like CA for people under 60." It has great reviews, articles, storied, and jokes. I have not read the whole thing, but what i have read, I really enjoy. Much more than I have anything from CA in a while, except maybe that article on Helmut Newton...

Re: Latest CA Issue

Every once in a while, CA has really good articles. A couple of issues back there was a write up about handmade shoes. I usually read it cover to cover, its just that most of the articles are about items and destinations that are a little out of reach for most of us.

The Newton article was awesome! Uh... I mean the pics. Hard to believe they were from the early 80's. Makes you wonder how they look now.

Re: Latest CA Issue

I thought the Cuba issue was great, for sure. I still don't understand having Tiger Woods as the cover with the past issue - I know they tried to explain it, but I thought that covering a cigar smoker would have made more sense.

that is one of the reasons i dont subscribe anymore. it felt like only 1/3 of it actually covered what i wanted to read about.
seriously: I dont golf. I dont wear hand made shoes. I dont drive an Austin Martin. I could not relate to about 90% of what they were talking about. Heck, i dont even smoke that many cubans.

It felt like there was relativly little cigar talk in a rag about cigars. It was a mens magazine with a cigar section in the back. thats what made the cuba issue better. There were more cigar related things there.

I want one that is like the cigar.com radio, TV, and newsletter rolled into one doubled in the amount of info and mailed to me monthly. I wanna know all i can about CIGARS. Thats why i bought the magazine. oh well... live and learn.

... as far as being on the actual topic, I have no clue. As stated above, i dont have - or smoke - many cuban cigars. I think i have six (6) cubans in my humi. this is probably 2-3 percent of my cigar collection. I save them for VERY special occasions.

Chris - which ones did you think were off the mark, if any?

I went back and looked at the Cuban issue. June 2007 "Cuba Tomorrow" I think is the one. Lots of iteresting articles in there that I had forgotten about. I'll reread it in the next couple of days.

I think I am with you Aubrey. I loved the Cuba issue but not so many since.

I think I need to PM Cigarsmoka and see if He has subscriptions yet to cigar press.

Re: Latest CA Issue

I was checking out a few differnet cigar websites and came across how Cigar Press Mag. does the reviews for their mag. It makes me wonder if CA is blind or if a lot of what they review is the brand.
Cigar Press Mag
http://cigarpressmag.homestead.com/page04.html
PANEL DESCRIPTION
Ratings are subjective and change with the tastes of time. Cigar Presshas instead developed a blind tasting system that is completely unbiased in order to reflect the quality of craftsmanship and tobacco in the cigars themselves. We are not assigning number values, rather detailed descriptions of each cigar. It is up to the reader to decide if the cigar sounds like something that would fit their personal taste.

Cigar shop panelists will be sent a package of cigars, re-banded with Cigar Press tasting panel bands assigned number and size values (e.g. Lancero #1). They smoke the cigars in the stores, allowing their regular customers to participate if they choose. With each cigar, they fill out an evaluation form with detailed notes. The characteristics they focus on are construction, body, flavor, complexity, and overall smoking experience. After each panelist has returned their evaluations to us, we take the results and summarize the characteristics that are common to each of the five panelistsí notes to best describe each cigar. No ratings, no numbers, no judgments are made, that part is left to the individual.

Re: Latest CA Issue

Anyone ever check out the European Cigar Cult Journal? I have an issue that I'm reading. Its pretty short considering that half the mag is in German. Cool pics tho! Not as many habanos as I thought.
