my local smoke shop (where i get most of my cigars) has a few jars of pipe tobacco. i have been very tempted to buy some. The jars have names on them. Im making an assumtion that this is the either the brand or flavor (or both). Are these standard throughout the pipe world and if so any recomendations?

how should i store the tobacco? All i know is Cigar storage. Any advice?

Most likely the tobacco is a mixture from Lane Limited. They supply bulk tobaccos, and often a store will change the name to match some local flair. Lanes 1Q is a popular blend and not to bad. I've found many of the cigar store tobaccos to be, yucky. :barf: If you can find a store where they know about and smoke pipes, you'll likely find a better selection.

I'm really an amateur in pipes but am learning. I like aromatic blend mostly with a blend called Elfin Journey to be my favorite http://www.thepiperoom.com/tobacco/hous ... lends.html
Dunhill Early Morning and My Mixture 965 blends to be a good English tobaccos. http://www.thepiperoom.com/tobacco/dunhill/dunhill.html

Don't use aromatics/english tobaccos in the same pipe, the taste will mix with each other and not taste right. Here's where corn cob pipes shine, there're cheap so you can try a tobacco without trying it in your briar.

Here's a great forum that deals with pipes, lots of great knowledge http://forum.pipes.org/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi

I store my tobacco in either a rubber sealed jar or a regular canning type jar with a tight lid. Keep the tobacco like cigars, about 70% humidity. adjust humidity according to blend and preferences.

Brendan is right, most B&M shops use either Lane or Altadis bulk for their jarred tobacco.

Before I buy any tobacco I haven't tried, I go to http://www.tobaccoreviews.com to look up the tobacco I am thinking of buying.

So Kuzi, what are you waiting for!?!?!?!?!

money.

im poor.
that and for it to warm up again. smoking in the house is a no no here, and with the passage of issue 5 bars are out too.

if i smoke aromatic will it make the house smell like old ashtray?

aromatics will make your house smell good... seriously. It has that sweet pipe smell that many people actually like.

As far as money, pipe smoking is very cheap. That is until you really get into it and start buying pipes. Corn cobs and tobacco cost next to nothing. You could get a corn cob or two and some tobacco to sample for under $10.

nice.

i could sit in the attic smoke a pipe and read a book.
Maybe my wife will think im burning incense.

I've been following this. I'm in. As soon as I can get to a BM I'm gonna try get a pipe and try it.

Eli, Kuzi, if one of you two happen to be my receiver in the secret Santa, I will be sure to hook you up....

I have been thinking of this for a while. I am going to go and get something this weekend

even if you dont get me in the gift exchange i may order something small and give it a shot.

ill keep you all posted on what i get. I already have a corn cob pipe i just need one of the tamper thingies and a lighter that isnt hot enough to spot weld with.

While smoking it does smell great! but after I think aromatics can leave a off smell. Dunhill early morning being an english, in y experience leaves less smell. I too try not to smoke in an enclosed room, a little ventilation goes a long way, and Clean Air smoking candles work pretty darn good.

Also, I like Captain Black tobacco. Its generally available everywhere. I've good things about Half and Half too. Both should be available in grocery and drug/discount stores.

i didnt want to start another thread called "pipe tobacco" so ill just toss it in here.

In the world of cigars an infused cigar is frowned on by purists.

it doesnt seem to be the same in the pipe world with aromatic tobacco. is that true? why?

it may be a very newbie question but i have yet to have my first bowl of my first pipe. any thoughts?

There are purists in the pipe world too. Both in regards to tobacco and pipes, but I don't worry about all them. I've read some very good books on pipes and pipe smoking and the authors say smoke what you enjoy and don't let others bother you. Each man has his own tastes, and over time they may change. If some one is enjoying Captain Black out of a Dr. Grabow, he is equal to some one smpoking an expensive english blend out of a $2000 Dunhill in my book.

Just find a website, book or friend to teach you how to pack, light, tamp, relight and draw a pipe. Its not difficult by any means, but learning a few techniques and honing them over time will add more enjoyment. Remember pipes are relaxing and fun, don't try and rush through a smoke, r e l a x . . . ahhhhh
