Told my wife I was going to give up cigarettes for a pipe...now I have to do it. What's a good set up for a beginner with low fundage?

That is a true brother of the leaf....good form Sam

Thank you! Offer gratefully accepted.
Brotherhood of the leaf...I like it.

Any chance you can let us know what's in your starter kit so the rest of us can do a little informed shopping?

I have a basic idea of what I'm going to be putting in there. Here's the overview:
a few pipes (of different shapes, good quality and smokable)
samples of different types of tobacco (virginia, virginia/perique, latakia, aromatic)
pipe cleaners
anything else I see that I can throw in.

brennivin, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I know the answer.

Wow! Thank you! My Lt said this sounds like a good change for me, too.

Dumb question, would an ordinary Bic style lighter work? If not, what should I look for?
Thank you.

While those can work in a pinch. I'd look for a pipe lighter. The flame comes out at an angle instead of straight up. Makes lighting a pipe easier. There are also pipe lighter inserts for zippos. If there is a smoke shop near you, check there. I got a zippo pipe lighter years ago from a smoke shop that carried mostly cigs (only 2 or 3 boxes of cigars and no pipes or pipe tobacco). Wooden matches work too, you just have to be careful not to scorch the top of the bowl. I should be getting the package in the mail to you today.

Thank you, I will check the local Stop 'N Rob for such a lighter.

would anything but a butane lighter taint the tobacco with light fluid taste?

Other means of lighting can affect the taste in lighting, but it will go away. There are a few things you can do to limit the affect of these other means of lighting. If you use a zippo, let it burn for a few seconds before you light your pipe. Matches need to burn down past the head.

I used my zippo exclusively for about a year until I could get a good pipe lighter. I still use it for outdoor use. They are great pipe lighters, but you have to refill them often.
YMMV.

Well, color me stunned. I recieved a package today in the mail, (USPS being just a little bit slow on the holidays!), and inside was SWilson80's version of a starter kit. I HAVE to wonder what he would consider an experts kit to be! I think I will behitting the local Stop N Rob forthat pipe lighter today - check this out!!!

Color me STUNNED! Thank you sir, that is one HECK of a well timed Christmas present/starter kit/etc... If this is the Brotherhood of the Leaf, (Longbottom?), I am glad to join!
BTW, I know this is gonna sound goofy - what is that clever looking tool used for?

Just trying to help. I got a package like that once upon a time.

The tool is a pipe tool. The flat end is a tamper, used to lightly tamp down the ash, a pick to remove some of the remains left in the bowl, and the scoop I have never used so I don't know.

Some of the pipe stems may look kinda manky, but they have been cleaned and steralized. Enjoy and try different tobaccos. There is a whole world of different flavor profiles out there.

I will give one a test run tonight, whilst I am cooking a steak on the grill. Thank you again!

And someday, I hope to be the guy passing the "kit" along to the next guy. A torch hath been passed.

Wow...truly a great way to bring joy to another, and done with no holds barred....great form Sam...great form...your a true BOTL!
