Pipe cleaning

I read somewhere to properly clean, you pull the stem, run the cleaner through to the bowl, scrub a bit, then use the opposite end to clean the stem from reverse, like scrubbing out a rifle barrel, (see, it CAN be gun related!), and then bend the cleaner into a U shape, and scrub out the bowl. Then I hear about "cake", and I wonder if I am removing something I should keep in the bowl. I light the pipe, and it will take several minutes to keep it lit, and a goodly supply of smoke. I do love it though - he may be tired of hearing it, but I'll say it again, THANKS SWILSON80!!!!

What I do after it cools, I seperate the stem from the bowl. Then I run a pipe cleaner down the stem and clean it out. Then I take another pipe cleaner and clean out the hole at the bottom of the bowl (from the shank). This usually pops out my screen. I then go back into the hole with the other end (get your mind out of the gutter). Then I take that cleaner and bend it in half, and clean out the shank itself. Then I use a pipe cleaner in a U like you mention and clean the bowl. I then reasemble, and replace screen. Rest. Enjoy. Repeat. :p

I don't use a filter but i do use a screen.

Helps? It can be a little off putting to get a tobacco fragment down the stem while drawing, but I just got used to it, and spit them out. After the pipe settles down, that stops.

Yah, I hate to catch molten lava on the tongue during a draw...takes me out of the enjoyment...and I always used a screen back in my pipe smoking days if you follow me...I guess that just stuck with me.

Hey new and just thought I would say hi.
I Don't like to clean the bowl. I want to creat a cake. It gives more flavor and helps with lighting. You will need to trin the cake if it gets thicker than 1/16 of an inch.

I never use a pipe cleaner inside the bowl. after I am done smoking, I loosed all the tobacco with the tamper, cover the bowl with my palm and shake it. That will disperse the fine ash and carbon, covering the inside of the bowl helping create cake. I do run a cleaner down the shank into the bowl to get all the dottle and moisture out.

I was just talking to the manager of The Briary in Bham the other day. Guy has been smoking pipes longer than most of us have been alive. Anyway he said he seldom uses a liquid pipe cleaner on any of his pipes more than once per year.

I do just what Capt said.
