W.L. Weller Reserve. I believe . . .

this seven year old, 90 proof bourbon from this label that puts out nothing bad and barely anything even marginal in their extensive lineup also goes by the name of Old Weller Reserve.

With the first part of Sunday being damp from the good country rains during the night and also fairly cool until well into the afternoon, I had no problem sipping some bourbon during the middle of the day after a nice lunch of hamburgers covered with Muir Glen organic ketchup or various hot sauces, and this new bourbon in my life made quite a nice impression. Another great tip from Hollow Point.

More to come, . . .

but of courrrrrrrrrrrrrrrse.

I love this one based on its dirt cheap cost first and foremost. Logic would say it is simply the 7 year old Antique (107º) with a considerable amount of water added... But to me common taste defies common logic...

Either that or I need my own supply of Kentucky spring water!

Yeah, it sure is distinct with a very special flavor. If that's the limestone Kentucky water, then get me a source, too!!! :D

You know Bloofington, one criticism I have of the whisk(e)y industry in general -and not just with American whisk(e)y - there is not enough information provided about when something was crafted, which batch, lot, dates, etc. provided.

I have heard from several people that the Weller Antique is an industry standard that they keep on hand , the bottle sits on the bar counter blah blah blah -on and on... When ever I find myself in similar situations, I can't help but wonder when the bottle(s) I purchased were produced and whether or not I got a subpar bottle or it is some slight profile variation that I personally don't like that everyone else does or what!?!?

Not to mention the other variables that I have trouble factoring in...

Yes, I agree 100%. It would be nice to know what the bottling date was, what warehouse, barrel, etc., but don't expect them to start giving you the exact mash bill now!!!

Occasionally one hears of a product whose formula "underwent changes back in '87", etc., cigars, laundry soap, TV dinners, you name it. I would like to know the same thing when it comes to what you mentioned.

As I was saying about the Weller Antique I purchased... It's not butt ugly but the bottle I got I'm suspicious of whether the very astute persons who have made the bar top standard comments would say that my bottle is representative of what they are talking about.

But I'd like the other information about the distilled & bottled dates plus any other information for identification purposes. Then we'd know if we were drinking from the EXACT same batches and all of us could get a better understanding of how our opinions differed etc. As it stands now, with most of the discussion, there is always the chance that the bottle you got was on the shelf for 10 years (although you'd expect the label etc to be different or worn to show)... Or that your bottle came from an outstanding bottling and mine didn't... etc.

When you get right down to it, each batch and the matching of profile, is performed by humans. Very skilled persons but if you believe they don't make mistakes, or can't be exact (every time) then you are discounting the fact that they are human.

That said, when one of us raves about something that the next guy cleans his shoes with, I always wonder if by chance the bottle the other person has is not representative of what I have. With dates, we'd know just how close the bottlings were or perhaps the exact same dates etc., which would likely mean our tastes differ significantly. As of right now it's like a giant crossword puzzle and we fill in the blanks with what we think fits best.

More inescapable wisdom from the man whose point is never hollow. As for bad bourbon however, never clean your shoes with it, just pump it into the nearest diesel locomotive. :D

I had another "look" at this one yesterday evening. Another one certain to make the Top 25, but which position? Stay tuned. Not to mention bang for the buck. If you're looking for something really cheap to warm the belly and provide first rate "classic" bourbon flavor, this is it.
